BRAD ROBERTS PLAYS MYRON’S Eclectic covers, a collection bf his hits, and off-color humor that would make even Howard Stern blush marked Brad Roberts first concert ppearance on P.E.I. (B) [ Admittedly, the latter tomment may be a slight pxaggeration. However, bs 18 proved to be a reat time for those in at- tendance at Myron’s Cabaret as the bass-voiced singer from the Crash Test Dummies, along with his guitar playing sidekick, went through a great set list — including Dummies hits “Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm,” “Afternoons and Coffeespoons,” and “The Superman Song.” On top of that, Roberts added covers such as “Unbreak My Heart” and Britney Spears’ “(Baby) One More Time.” If you _ happened to miss this show — Drive Dull Care Awa Edward Ives Institute of Island Studies Dr. Edward “Sandy” Ives, the retired University of Maine folklorist who established himself as the Prince Edward Island equivalent to the legendary American folklorist Alan Lomax, has had his P.E.I. field-working memoirs printed recently (A). A project of U.P.E.I.’s Institute of Island Studies, this book takes the reader through the genesis of Ives’ interest in the Island’s folk music, and through each of his working visits here to learn about Larry Gorman, Lawrence Doyle, and whatever else turned up along the way. : Commencing in 1956 when Ives’, still a student, placed an ad in the Bangor Daily News looking for information on Larry Gorman — a name often mentioned as a great songwriter by those who worked in the Maine lumber- ing woods. When the re- sponses indicated a wealth of knowledge regarding Gorman’s work was available, in his home province of P.E.L., Ives paid his first visit in 1957. Taking the reader through the often colorful accounts of his visits to the mostly rural population of the Island, this book paints a unique picture of the Island way of life as it was forty years ago. An aesthetically pleasing project sporting a beautiful cover, it also contains a large number of photos to help illustrate the era and subject matter, as we:i as the lyrics, musical notation ana back- ground notes to 62 of P.E.I.’s best known folk-songs. Perhaps the greatest addition of all was that of a 14 track © cd which features the songs Ives’ collected, as they were originally heard and re- corded; allowing the listener to actually hear each of these songs is a wonderful way to preserve the songs. If you have an interest in t!:e culture of P.E.I., or more particularly in its musical tradition, you'll enjoy reading Drive Dull Care Away. Well written and extremely inter- esting, I came away having learned a great deal — all the while enjoying it. I give it my highest recommendation. part of Roberts’ “Working Vacation” solo tour — you may be in luck as all of his concerts were taped in hopes of having it released as a cd through his label. Should this cd see the light of day, it'll be one to look out for. a
