Zealand from the Discovery, who have
hudexperlence ol' both the arctic und
nntnrctlc, sny that the cold in the lut-
tcr is less severe and the atmosphere
drier. A curious phenomenon they did
not expect and cannot explain is the
fact that the cold winds in the iiutarc-
tic were usually north, while the com-
pnrntively warm winds were southerly.
They saw lcebergs of the most fantas-
tic shapes, resembling houses, church-
es and- steamers. The sledge dog!
struck work repeatedly, und the men
had to do quite as much pulling ns the
iinlmnla. In the western sledge jour-
ney un ice slide was descended in 1
minute and 10 seconds. It took three
days to ascend the same slide on the*
return journey, the sledges being
hauled up by block and pulley.

A protest is being raised-_ ln Switzer-
land against the construction of so
many mountain railroads and particu-
larly of the line which is slowly creep-
ing up the Jungtrau. The Wengena
Alp, it seems, once sacred to the beau-

the Elger glacier, and at the Sheldeck
a grumophone has taken the place of
the “Rana des Vnches.” Happily there

and extensive that on the Bernel
Oberland. at all events. another decade
