LONDON, April 9.-—-Mr. Parnell has not yet returned from Ireland, but he personally denied the report of his al- eged marriage to Miss O’S ea to me when it was first started. His private secretary, Mr. Campbell, says that the report is just as untrue now as it was then, so far as he knows. The World's correspondent has seen live mem- bers of Mr. Parnell's partywho all deny the story. Nothing of the kind has been printed or even intimated here. Such reports are easily invented for America, without fear of contradiction. _——.._—¢...:_.__ Fed Them to the Dogs. Loxnox, April 13.——The latest advices from India concerning the massacre at Manipur are that Coininissioner Quinton was decapitated and his body horribly backed, the limbs being afterward thrown outside the city walls, where they were devoured by dogs. Two officers, whose names are not iven, and a bugler were spared by the IE liis, and Mr. Grimwood, the British political agent at Mani ur, and two other oflicers were shot. he bodies of all the victims were bruta‘ly mutilated and afterwards thrown over the walls of the city, as in the case of the unfortunate commissioner. The remains of two ofiicers who were killed during the fighting were treated in a similar manner. A large reward has been offered for the capture of the regent of Manipur. The Salvationgllllrmy Marriage i . Toronto Globe: The bill which the Attorney-General has introduced extend- ing to the stall’ officers of the Salvation. Army the right to soloinnise marriages may grieve the hearts of some few peo- ple who have not kept quite abreast of the liberal spirit of the age; In some quarters the opinion entertained by the church people of the army is not high; many excellent people cannot regard the army as an organised de- nomination, and have to call upon their Christian charity to think no harder of them than that they are gueirilh soldiers of Christianity with grotesque church they have recommended themselves by their earnestness and devotion and are recognised as an ally in the work of rain- ing fallen manhood and womanhood. The bill is extending to the Salvation. Army what the Marriage Bill 60 years ago gave to the ministers no‘ then belonging to the Established Church. :—:- A Closer Union Needed. LONDON, April 9. —At the Canada Club dinner last night Mr. Staveley Hill, M. P., read a letter from Sir John A. Mac- donald, thanking him and his other English friends for their sympathy and help during the elections. Mr. Hill, in the course of a speech which was enthusi- astically received said that England should and must take prompt measures to bring the colonies into a closer an} more material association with the Mother Country. ,- He urged Canadians to show a little more consideration to Newfoundland in her present dilemma, remembering their ultimate destiny as one confederated people. He said that he intended to move in the House of Commons that Pre- mier Whiteway and the other New- foundland delegates, now on their way here, be heard at the bar of the House. As time goes on the feeling against the coercion of Newfoundland is growing stronger among the Liberals and Mr. Gladstone is said to be strongly opposed to it. Among the Conservatives not a few are indignant at the attitude of France, bele-viiig that the object of that country is to coerce the English into abandoning Egypt. There is also a pre- valent impression that France will, ere long, be involved in difiiculties that will make her attitude on the Newfoundland question of very little moment to Great Britain.
