Tue esason why *‘ Myrtle Navy” to- bacco has taken so strong @ hold upon the iMeking community is because it is the fMuine article. Noman has a desire to smoke anything else than tobacco. Even opium is not smoked for the pleasure of smoking it, but for its soporific effects. The desire for tobacco is, of course, best “tisfied by getting the pure article, and when to this is added the finest quality the ‘Mtisfection is complete. In the House of Commons in reply to Mr. Davies, Hon. Mr. Tupper said that the act passed some years ago, putting duty on Newfoundland fish, imported into Can- ada, was not put in force, there being an understanding to that effect between the Government and the officers of customs. The act was not suspended abvut two months ago The customs officers were notified to put the Act into operation, aud they collected the duties, Replying to Mr. Borden, Hon. Mr. Fos- ter said that Sir Charles Tupper was given the power of a plenipotentiary to enter in- to a full treaty with the Spavish Govern- ment by which Canadian products are ad- mitted to the Spanish West Indies upon the same terms as the products of the United States. Answering questions from Landkerkin, Hon, Mr. Bowell said that the customs officers at Montreal did collect duty, as they had a right to do, on a British flag pre'ex'6! by the Duke cf Connaught asa pr ze to the best drilled corps of Montreal cadets. But, on the matter being brought to the notice of the Government, the duty was refunded. L H. Davies—**Poor old flag.” Hon, Mr. Bowell—It waa not an old one, so the hon. gentleman need not sneer at it Hon. Mr. Haggart, replying to Mr Davies, said thac the Canadian Pacific Railway paid nothing for running privileges and station or other accommodation cver the Intereolonial Railway between St Juho and Halifax, as all trams running between these points are trains of the latter road, fares on which, over that section ot the road, accrue to the Intercolonial. But, as a regular practice, car mileage charge is made for cars ot one rvuad running on the road of another. A discussion aroze on a motion for a re turn regardirg the duty paid on binder twine. The members of the opposition argued in favor of abolishing the duty, as it was under s combine. Mr, Mulock accused Mr. Stairs of being at the head of this combine and asked him if it were not so, that the Cordage Company at Halifax made a binding twine tor export aud sold it at 14 cents leas than it was charged to consumers ia this country. Mr. Stairs said that cordage was made for export but not of the same qaality, and sold cheaper than was disposed of to consumers at home. Mr. Davies,—‘‘I had a letter from a gentle- man fn Halifax stating that cordage was sold for the export trade at ® cents while it was charged at 114 cents at home.” Mr. Stairs—‘**That is not so.” for a return was granted. Mr. Davies moved a resolution for a re turn relating to the contract between the Canadian Pa-:ific Railway and the Inter- colonia) Railway companies as to the runniag wers between St. John and Halifax, and in doing so accused the road of being run in the interests of the Conservative party, which was the cause to a great extent of so large a deficit. The resolution passed. Sir John Thompson gave notice of a mo- tion to take Thursday for Government bua- iness for the remaiader of the session. This is held to be another indication that the session will be s short one. Hugh John Macdonald will resign his seat as member for Winnipeg at the close of the present session, business interests requiring his sole attention, fr. Davies will ask for all correspond- ence respecting the admission of Newfound- land into the Dominion. THE BEHRING SEA MATTER. Heidtien Guilehad The motion WasHincton, March 29, Lord Salisbury’s last communication to the President, stating the grounds upon which he would consent to a renewal of modue vivendi as to the Behring Sea, will be laid before the Senate to-day.
