Is + lHl MURNING GUARDIAN. WEDNESDAY. MARCH l, 1899. , I Panvnnrioivon nisnasn. There are a few persons still living who can remember that at the begin- ning of the century one half the popu- tlation of England was marked with small-pox. Hundreds of thousands died of the loathsome disease and _ pious people thought it was by the ` will of God. We know now that they perished for want of knowledge. l I I The discovery of a preventive has so ` changed the face of affairs that now not aperson in a thousand ever be- comes infected with small-pox in England. i Drainage, water supply, .house in- spection and the isolation of persons attacked by infectious disease have reduced the mortality bills in the large cities of the civilized world by tens of thousands annually. But there is one great and sweeping plague still abroad in all civilized lands, which causes more deaths year by year than .cholera or pestilence. We refer to tuberculosis, which may attack the human system in various parts with , differing symptoms, but which in its ‘ ;nore common form of attack through the lungs is known as consumption- tubercular consumption. It spares neither age nor sex, neither the high nor the low in station. And it is no _more the will of the good Father in lHeaven that people should die 'of consumption than that they should die of smallpox. Physicians and scientist stell us that tuberculosis afllicts the animal races _as well as man ; that it may be and is communicable from ,one person to another under certain conditions, and that it is communicable from one an- imal tc another and from animals to man. It is absolutely known that ,tuberculosis is in some measure pre- valent among cattle, and of all cattle most prevalent among milch cows. The relations between the cow and the family are very close. We drink _her milk, and when fattened and ` made into beef we eat her flesh. And _either the milk or the flesh of a tuber- ,, culous cow may communicate ` tuber- culosis to the child or man. It is not a little singular that the cow, which furnished to Dr. Jenner and to thousands since his day the lymph that secures immunity from small-pox should be the __ means of infecting us with ‘lanother and, though it works more slowly, a more fatal disease. iBut the fact that we readily take the _ kine pox from the cow, of itself _furnishes proof positive that disease may be communicated from the herd to the family. Therefore it requires no special medical or physiological knowledge to prove that disease may be communicated_`from a cow to a _man, or a woman or child. - Now it appears sufficiently clear to intelligent persons that just as 'hun- _ PP y- City Hall, Ch’town, Feb 25th,’99. 27td idreds of thousands perished of small- pox from want of knowledge and pre- #trois-Cece-eie-e-ee-e
