we recall a basketball game here in 1963 when S.D.U. trailed U.N.B. by one point With 5 seconds to go & hadr the ball, after a turnover & time-out, under their own basket. Our Joe Sassi made a long heave to Bob Francuer under the U.N.B. basket who, closely guarded.made a desperate backward overhead heave & had the ball go through the hoop just as the.game—ending buzzer 'sounded.Weuhad a one point win! Naturally, there was a big prot— est from U.N.B. with the claim that Bob had thrown the ball too late but to no avail. We recall that the timekeeper said that, in his opinion, the ball had been thrown in time. One of the U.N.B. players-asked "Were you watching the ball...or the clock?..that was a good question. Somebody observed that the timekeeper >would have to be a damn fool or a brave, brave man to have decided against the hometeam pin such a close call & then JOPGJQQ stay living in Chatlott— town & having friends! Trailing by a 68-69 score our Mark Vickers made a last second desperation throw that went in & was thought to be the winning score, only to have the timekeeper rule that the ball was thrown AFTER the game ended. -We'd like to see a rule change that would have play continue to a whistle & so end the contro— versy that always seems to be decided in favour of the home team. we are not suggesting that the timekeeper erred, we believe in going along with gamI officials and we know he had a hard decision to make & we believe the way now rates as #1 ,it quite unfaif that a game deciding decision has to be made by a minor official. We must wonder, however, like the unhappy 1963 U.N.B. protester,“ was he watching the play or the clock &, if watching one,how could he be expected to see_ the other? Aside from the un- fortunate loss it was a close and exciting game, once again a come—from- behind one for us. Dennis High led our scoring with 16 with Mark Vickers (15) vand Tom Kappos (14) close behind. Unfortunately for us this game had to be played with Bronx Feighrey handling the coaching chores and Gary Heald watching, from the middle of the 2300 spec— tators that crowded the palatial X Gym, probably Wig-wagging instructions to the bench. It mayihdve cost us the game.
