No, no, my ehild, Auat Patience laid her money away too safely for any lope of reeovery atter all these years. Don't let such . footish thought enter your head my dear it is but waste of time Faith reached across the table, and Juid one finger on an ancient looking box. ‘See. Max.’ she cried, ‘ here's the old lady's workbox—I dost believe mamma has ever disturbed its. contents, Who knows,’ she cried, with a sudden tire in her brown eyes, but Aunt Patience may have hidden her money away in it.’ Vain hope !’ said Mrs. Lyndsey ; * the box has been overhauled and examinod over and over again, Faith sighed. ‘Ah, woll,’ she said resiguediy. ‘ | suppose I mast submit to fates decrees. But ifouly wo had a little of that money --think hew much it weuld accom lish !’ , She had taken from the box a ball of wax—-such as commonly forms part of the paraphernalis of a workbox, and toyed idly with it as she talked. But as she finished the last sentence her eyes met her lovers gaze, and she itushed rosily at the thought ef what her speech implied. In her confusion she dropped the bal] of wax. It relied across the rug at her feet, and right into the blazing wood ire. Faith sprang to her feet with a little cry of dismay. ‘Oh, what a pity! she eried brand- ishing the poker, ‘and it is over seven- teen years old! She thrust the implement she held into the flaries and rolled the melting wax toward the rug. But it was too late to suave il. | The wax had entirely melted and lay upon the hearth ina great soft pool, and there, before their astonished eyes, as thongh a magician’s wand had called it forth, glowed and sparkled something —shining, scintillating. With a low cry of rapture Mrs. Lyndsey stooped and raised it ‘Max—Fuaith,’ ‘unt Patience’s last.’ And so it proved. The eccentric old Jady had converted all her ready money into one immense diamond. {fow she had obtained it no one could conjecture, but she had hidden it away ia this odd receptable, only to be ressur- rected after seventeen long years. And Mrs. Lyndsey —bheir at law—~as well as by the old Jady’s will—had no trouble in exchanging the jewel for greenbacks—a handssme fortune. Mrs Lyndsey insisted on purchasing the practice of Dr. Shipton for her future son-in-law, and Max accepted the money as # loan. He and Faith were married soon, and with Mrs. Lyndsey went to live in a retty Gethic cottage just within the city of Rochester. Max is a popular physician now: gossip says he is getting rich fast; and hearts of the happy trio are ever grate- ful for the unhoped for discovery of the fortune which came just in time. t, Every she said, brokenly, fortune is found at Tho peculiar merits of sheep raising are worthy of all attention on the part of our farmers. Notwithstanding its yast extent the United States raised in 1878 only one million more sheep than Great Britain, and the weight of the years product of wool in Great Britain actually exeeed the weight of the same product in the Republic by thirty-three millions of pounds. Australia raises alucest double the number of sheep that are raised in Great Britain and the United States together, although its yearly weiglt of wooi is only thirty- seven millions of pounds more than the yearly weight raised in Great Britain. Notice should be taken of the value of mutton as food. A recent agricultural writer has estimated that a pound of' pork costs the farmes three times as much as the creation of a pound of mutton, a much more healthy and nn- tricious meal. eeninmaen, ern nme Remedy for Hard Times.
