After repeated demands, the money-lenders became importunate, and finally swooped down upon the ‘armstead, and placed the customary men in possession. Just at this time his youngest child was taken seriously " Allan doted on his little four- year-old, and his cup of sorrow was »onsequently filled to the brim. Seated by the little bed, the young farmer razed wistfully into the sleeping face of his child. Oh, that he could raise the money! He would do anything could he but retrieve—— Stay. would he? Several matters of importance con- aected with the farm detained him in the morning. He seemed moody, and fisinclined for conversation. His wife watched him curiously, and noted with fismay the peculiar look which sat apon his face, He never commun?- sated his determination to her. So ‘requently had he exhibited anger on this very topic, that he could not now osring himself to mention it. He saw the look of misgiving which tenanted ser face, and it annoyed him and add- td to the wild, haggard expression which sat upon his. He saddled his aorse in silence, mounted and rode tway, only shouting back to Hilda that se would be back within an hour. In en minutes he was at the market own, cismounted from his horse and mtered a chemist’s shop. His pur- *hase was a significant one, consisting »f a pound of ‘white argenic.”” He had 10 difficulty in procuring it. His state- ment that he required it for wheat fressing, and the fact that he was a ‘armer were quite sufficient to justify Vn solus in handing the dangerous yemmodity over Punctual to the time he had stated, Allan rode up fo tis house, partook of a hasty meal, ang then set out on foot for his uncle’s "esidence Allan Eastly was not aware that Benjamin Westlake had been seized with sudden illness some few days sreviously, but such was the case, fhe old man was ill in bed. For a moment he paused, as if in- ‘lined to return, but, with a settled 1ard look on his face, he quickened sis steps in the direction of his uncle’s 10us* Night was beginning to fall as 1e entered. He was speedily ushered nto old Westlake’s room, and the old man motioned to the nurse to retire. This woman had been his housekeeper ‘or many years nd held high hopes ‘ht she was mentioned in her master’s will She was quickly aroused into tuspicion when Allna Eastly entered, ind although she left the room, she ingered outside, with her ear to the rey-hole. “T have heard strange news on my way here,” said Allan, addressing his ancle. , | and County of St. again. He lingered outside, walking up and down with his eyes fixed om the ground, started at the least sound from the court, when it was an- nounced that the prisoner had been condemned to death, Dr. Marchant had to be assisted to a cab The day fixed for the exe pidly drew near 1 and, ution ra- It wanted but a week to the moment wehn AllanEastly would suffer an ignominous death Dr. Mar- chant was taken suddenly ill He was scized with apoplexy whilst sitting in his chair. A magistrate was sent for, and on his arival Dr. Marchant made the astounding state- ment that Allan Wastly was innocent of all connection with his uncle’s death. The patient's medicine had in- @eath. The doctor, in personally dis- pensing his patient's medicine had in- advertently filled up the bottle with a solution of arsenic insteaag of water. He never discovered his error until after his return from the post mortem and had then been so overcome at his error that he lost all command of him- self and dared not face the consequ- ence of his deplorable accident As he pondered over the fact that it meant life-long ruin to him, the contempla- tion increased his fear to such an ex- tent that he was utterly unable to speak that word which would at once have established the innocence of a much wron Of course \iberated. zed man Allan Eastly Dr. Marchant was at once died a fort- night afterwards.
