In the election of 1860, the Democratic party divided, on phases of the slavery question, into two hostile camps, rominating Presidential tickets. corseauence was that each The Abraham Lincoln, the Republican nomil- | was elected; and for twenty-four years the Republican party has retaived the reins of power.
