R months old son of Mr. and Mrs. Dori Cool- en, which occurred at Victoria General Hospital at lialifnx last evening. Mrs. Coolen, nee Eileen Lane, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. ll. Lane of Montague. Main IHighway Nears completition ..tThe paved highway between Murray River and Murray Har- bour will he completed this week or early next week it was learn- cd yesterday. Approximately one mile remains to be completed which will require about 2 days. Officials estimate that about 3000 feet of this new type pave- ment can he laid per day, an coni- pared with almost l l1'2 miles of the light pavement. The basis for the new type pavement is in the gravel top road. This is pulverized by a machine to an average depth of three in'ches, making a fine easily work- able top. The asphalt tender then precedes the pulvizer over the road spraying asphalt which is thoroughly worked In by the pul- vcrizer. Three and sometimes more applications are made. after which the road is rolled to a compact surface. Although this is A new exper- iment for the Island, this type of road has bcen successful in On- tario and Quebec where it has been used for many seasons un- dcr different conditions and dif- ferent roadii. The resulting road at Murray Harbour looks very good. and officials expect. that it will give service equally as good as any other type pavement over a period of time. The completion of this mad pro- vides a through pavement from Charlottetown and western points direct in Murray Harbour, and this should have far ranching economic of-fecta on the whole area serviced by this highway. Maclntyre, Montague. Since the paming of Mr. Macln- tyre, his sons, Bruce and Clive have taken charge of the farm. and have conducted it well in the manner of their father. Last year a. new ten acre field was laid out. and this year to- field will he the picking itrca. This year six more new acres were laid out to be picked off next year. Approximately 5000 boxu per acre. it is expected, will be the average yield. the bulk of which will be canned at Johnson's Can- nery in Montague. and the remain- der will be sold t.o local trade with some being shipped to outside points. About fifty pickers or more will be hired during the height of the season, and picking is expected to gel. underway next. week. The large number of varieties grown at the Maclntyre farm include nine acres of Dunlop and the remain- ing acreage of Dorset, Midlands, Premier, Drcsdon and Spanklc. Besides carrying on this new in- dusiry, in which they have been, engaged commercially for the pastl six years. they also carry on large farming operations in grain, hay. and potatoes with over sixty acres being cultivated. Large quantities of straw are required to cover -the berry rows for the winter. and I.hl.'l is derived from the farm, which employs four to five steady em- ployees from spring to fall. The present price of berries. under daily fluctuations. is 30 cents to the grower. and 35 cents to the consumer locally. Without doubt this farm is one of the lat!- est strawberiy production farms. It has been the centre of attrac- tion every summer for countless visitors lrm the U. S. A. and cen- tral Canada, who have commented favorably on the extensive straw- berry cultivation carried on at the Maclntyre Farm. nrlilroclailon especially to Rev. Last .month approximately 700 people registered in the visitors' book at Confederation Chamber and it is estimated that only two- thirds of the callers sign their names. of particular interest is the fact that a large number of them came from 23 of the United States. Represented were Maine, Ver- mont. Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rliode island, New York. New Jer- sey. Pennsylvaniii. Ohio. Indians. Illinois. Michigan. Iowa. Kansas. Missouri. Nebraska. Colorado. Washington. Oregon. California. Florida, District of Columbia and Tennessee. l Visitors also came from every one of the 10 Canadian Provinces and from the Northwest. Territor- ies, Scotland, England. Holland and Australia. The occupations or the profes- sions ot the visitors were as varied as their origins. Tliere were teach- ers and ranchers. soldiers, airmen, C.W.A.C.. grocers, printers, veter- inarians. bandsmen. nurses. it ships master and a labor concil- iator, lawyers. clergyman. doctors, artists, librarians and a bacteriolo- gist.
