THE DAILY EXAMINER, CHARLOTTETOWN, DECEMBER 5, 1899 THE DAILY EXAMINER DECEMBER 5, 1899, WHAT IS THS MATTER en Wifi faa LIBSRAG PARTY? When Sic Louis returned from his tbrough Belfast and Marray | Harbor, it is said thathe asked a friend to | tell bim what was the matter with the | Liberal party in Prince Edward Island. Before going to England he had attempted | | toget up a party organization in King’s | and East Queen’s but he could not get his old friends to come round him in any considerable numbers, even although free excursions were tendered them on .xoVv- On 4i8 return from England he still felt lone~ | some notwithstanding he had put a notice in the party organ that he would be glad ‘to bave his friends call on him, ‘Then came his southern trip which was, on the whole, a dismal failure; and he left the Province conscious that there was some- thing very Serious the matter with the Libera! party in this Province, Wedo not know what aoswer Sir Louis ‘anxious inquiry above re- received io th ferred to, but we know that a little frank~ eas on tie par of his friend would have enabled our koight to better uodersiand the lack of enthusiasm witb which he has been re- ceived bv his former friends. In ei front of any candid explanation would stand the disappointments felt at his utter, - disregard of his pre-elect promised the people to remove every ves~° lige of protection from the tariff, but in- stead of this the Government of which he 1s amember have adopted the policy of protection. He promised that he wouid reduce the expenditure, instead of which it has been enormously increased. He promised eccess tothe market of sixty millions, by which prices would be en- hanced and every-body made rich; but no sixty million market has materialized and petatoes are selling at 162 and oats at 27¢ per bushe!. He promised honest admiais~ tration instead of which we have hud Drummond aod Yukon deals. One of the troubles with the Liberal party is that many of their members are shocked at the appalling difference which they observe be tween Sir Louis’ promises and perform- ances, Another trouble in the Liberal ysarty arises from the fact that many of them are heartily tired of the recklessness of as- sertion which marke all Sir Louis’ public utterances. Where is the business man, whether Liberal or Conservative, who is not disgusted with such statements as Sir Louis is reported by The Patriot to have made at Powna! aad Kings‘on, that he wa the means of reducing the ratee on the winter steamers to those in force during the summer mouths. This reduction was made when Senator Ferguson represented the Province in the Government of Sir McKenzie Bowell. Equally offensive to all right thinking men, was the statement he made at Pownal that no man on the other side has dared to formulate ina proper manner, any charge against a Minister of the Laurier Cabinet. Everybody knows that this statement lacks the “essential ele- ment.” Sir Hibbert Tupper, in his place in Parliament deliberately charged Mr. Sifton with the grossest mismanagement» acd offered, on the p2ril of the loss of his seat in Parliamen!, to substantiate, before a proper tribunal charges of corruption is the affairs of the departement of the In- terior; but the Government called in their majority and voted down an investiga” tion. The troub!e with the Liberal party is that many of them are finding out that Sir Louis’ statements cannot be relied on. The wonder is that they did not find it out long ago.
