HOW THE ISLANDERS WORKED. SOME COMPLIMENTARY REMARKS, Quesec, Sept. 13. The Garrison Artillery Competition is still in progress and will last till Saturday. Prince Edward Island detachment shifts were very remarkable for admirable pre- cision and drill displayed. The detachment consisted of a very fine body of men and the easy manner in which they handled the gun gave evidence of a gowd deal ‘of careful practice. The 58-cwt. gun was rolied right up by them on the carriage without a hitch of any kind, when, just as it should have slipped into its place, it dropped down alongside the carriage in the very middle of the de- tachment. This contre temps was exceed- ingly disheartening, not ouly to the com- petitors’ team, but also to the spectators, who were greatly interested in the splendid handling of the gun by this detachment, and expected to see extra good time made. But for the accident just described the de- tachment would have done the shifting in 3.30. The fall of the gun in the middle of the detachment was startling to many old artillerymen present, who knew of the dangerous character of these shifts. Most miraculously nobody was hurt. Undis- mayed by the disaster, the detachment immediately went to work to replace the gun in position. The time occupied in the shift was somewhere about 8 minutes, though the most difficult part of the shift had to be gone over twice, besides rolling the gun back from the place where it fell. _ “*B” shift was made by this detachment in four minutes. It was a beautiful piece of drill, and again earned for the P. E. Is- land boys hearty applause and congratu- lations of the spectators. Halifax did the “A” shift in 4m. 11s. ‘“*B” shift in 3m. 45s. Haurrax, Sept. 13. A roofer tripped over a telephone wire while repairing a building. While falling, his arm went into the pot of boiling pitch, which took the flesh off at once. She prayed the men holding her to desist. Morphine was ad- ministered and she fell asleep and never awoke. They will investigate the matter. Ottawa News. Orrawa, Sept. 13.
