It leads in silver and lead, and contributes largely to tle output of copper | in regard to which, how- | ever, it is stated that the greatest increase hes been from the Sudbury district in Ontarie, Quebec, also, which ranks third among the preducers of the metal, dcipg a | fairshare. The valae of ihe copper pro- | duct has grown from $1,021,960 in 1&96 to $1,501,660, or by close upon 50 per cent. The value of the eilver output increased in the rame time from $2,149,503 to $3,322,- 905, that of lead from $721,159 to $1,396,- 853, and that of nickel from $1,188,990 to $1,399,176, This greatest increase, how- ever, is ip gold. In 1896 ihe production of this metal passed all records and reached $2,780,086 last year the value was $6,190,000. The in- crease in the twelve mouths was 123 per cent. Much of this ie, of course due to tne discovery of the Yakon placer fields, from the operations in which Canada reaped but a comparatively small advantage. The interest created by the Yukon discoverier, and by the reports astothe richness of the northern Ontario fields, has spurred those concerned in gold properties every~ wiere to greater exertions, and wherever there are signs of ariferous deposits activity is being shown in prospecting or operating them. Wasurineren, March 5.—It weedevelop- ed yesterday afternoon through telegraphic correspondence between Secretary Long and Admiral Sicard that the court is unable to fix even an approximate date for the conclusion of its investigation into the disaster to the Maine. Sharing the general anxiety for some informatien on this point, Secretary Long, at the instance of the cabinet, sent a tele- grrm to Admiral Sicard asking him when it was expected that the report of the court would be made, and late last night the following reply was received : Key Wwer, March 4. Have talked with the president of the court of inquiry, and agree with him that ix is DOt possible to fix a date for the find- | of the divers and wieckers and the results they obtein. Every effort is being made to advance the inquiry. The court re- turns to Havana by the Mangrove this evening, having about finished tbe examination at Key West, (Signed) Stearn. Admiral Sicard’a message is regarded Officially as disposing of the reports that | the court bas obtained positive or con- clusive information besring upon the object of their investigation, It is taken to mean that upon the testimony of diseoyeries of the divers will depend th finding, the.exam ination of the officers and ‘crew of theshiphaving been insufficient to enable the court to.even torm an idea as to what linea may be opened. up from the investigation of the wreck itself. — + Carter's for Wall Paper We specially re. questa payment of all accounts sent out by us, Deoember 31.°97 Haszard & oore, Sunnyside.
