In fact, nearly nll the werds used in a slang way by thieves and police officers come nearer to expressing the exact idea of what we mean to illustrate than most people think. Take, for instance, the phrase ‘Stole 2 diamond.’ Now, that’s all right ia its way, but there’s a hundred or more ways in which diamends may be stolen, so it gives no clew as to the particular method of operation. But when we are told that some crook has ‘nipped’ a spark we know exactly how he did it and have a fair sort of lead to work on. “To ‘nip’ a spark means to cut off a diamond from a man’s shirt front. The phrase originated in the style of the in- strument used by the thief. Diamonde lost in this way are not unscrewed or pulled out from a shirt front, as some people believe. She not only cuinedé ‘et self at cards, but would have beggared her sister Mary as well had not their friends intervened and insisted sisters separating. Horace Walpole gives a pitiful account of “poor Miss Pelham sitting up all night at the club without a woman, losing hundreds a night and her temper, beating her head and exposing herself before the young men and the waiters.” Another writer says that the unhappy woman often played cards with the tears streaming down her cheeks. Lady Mary Compton, an old maiden lady, a contemporary of Miss Pelham and, like her, adidicted to gambling, had the same propensity to tears. When she lost, we are told, she wept bitterly—~‘‘not for the loss itself,” she was careful te explain, “but for the unkindness of the cards.” Swearing. General Washington, it is said, once attered an oath, and his example is pre- sented as an excuse for the profanity of other men. But with the statement Gen- eral Washington’s opinion of swearing should always be joined. He said, “This is a vice so mean and low, without any temptation, that every man of sense and character despises it.” The Largest Cannon. The largest cannon in the world was taken by the British when India was conquered. The cannon was cast about the year 1500, and was the work of a chief named Chuleby Koomy Khan of Ahmednugger. The inside of the gun is fitted up with seats, and is a favorite place for British officers to go for a quiet noonday smoke.
