Business sentiment ap- pears to be improving but the re- storation of the market confidence on a broad scale is likely to re- quire more time in order to gauge the effect on earnings of the recent advances in labor and material costs. This appears to be particularly applicable to the auto group which has not yet passed on the increase costs in higher prices for automo- biles. The steel companies acted quick- ly in this regard and the metal companies appear likely to retain a good proportion of the earlier sharp advances in prices of copper. lead and zinc. The Oil industry approaching the heavy consuming season is in good shape with re- spect to profit margins. Our feeling is that the market in general might continue to sell within the recent trading range _unt1i the budget message appears and until some further light 1's thrown in possible future policies o! unionized labor. NOON COMMENT Average prices have moved slightly lower this morning but there has been an accompanying shrinkage in volume. Metal and grain markets are somewhat lower abroad and probably the news item of another substantial shipment of Russian Gold arriving 1n England for transhipment to New York has tended to keep the problem of world gold movement in the fore- front. In general the market seems to be in a waiting mood for some and the President's relief message, the letter expected next week. Leidlaw and Company.
