The African Methodist Episcopal Church of the United States has been holding its annual conference at Boston and congratulating ilself on the work it is accomplishing in raising the status of the colored peopie of the south. The Church possesses three universities and sixjcolleges of various grades, with 150 professors, and 3,000 students, and pro- perty valued at haifa million. In sup port ot these institutions last year there was raised $250,000, less than a fifth coming from others than the members of the Vburcli. Phei-was the first year of organized effort and gives them courage to go on with the task set be-— fore them, which affords ample scope for their labors, it being estimated that there are in the union 4,380,000 color- ed people, of whom 1,127,000 are oi school age, who can neither read nor write. Itis not alone to these, though, that the Church extends a helping hand; branches have been established in Canada and missionaries sent to Africa and the West Indies. — The Severn Tunnel Completed.
