Community Connector Fair by Bob GIBSON Student Services One of the richest experiences students can have is gained through service to others. PEI has a proud his- tory of volunteer efforts and UPEI stu- dents are no exception. Often students would like to learn more about the var- ious programs and services available, would like to volunteer, but are unsure how to proceed. At the same time, there are numerous community organ- izations who rely on volunteers and who would like an opportunity to recruit for their various activities but may lack the resources to effectively do so. The Community Connector Fair is intended to bridge this gap. In what we hope will be come an annual event, Student Services is pleased to announce first Community Connector Fair, to be held on Wednesday September 26th from 10:00 - 3:00 in the UPEI Sports Centre. Representatives from twenty- SMUGGLERS 8) one not-for-profit organizations will be on hand to describe what they do and the kinds of opportunities they may have for volunteers. In addition to sharing their skills and talents and a sense of contributing to a worthy cause, students can also benefit from the enhancement this will bring to their career prospects by being able to include such involvement on their résumé. In many instances, satisfac- tion gained through volunteer activi- ties exceed that earned through paid employment. We see this “community con- nection” as a win-win situation for everyone and encourage all students to drop by the Sports Centre on September 26th. Beyond this one day event, plans are underway to maintain an up-to-date database of information and volunteer opportunities through the Department of Student Services on a year-round basis.
