P. By Guardlaivp Special Wire) NEW YORK, Aug. 25-l..iquid- ation, confined at first to public utilities, was contagious in the stock market Saturday and gradu- ally spread throughout the rest of the list, bringing loises of 1 to 3 or more points in many shares. From the start tho power shares were droopy under ,pressure of selling attributed to the Wall Street opinion that the modified clause to eliminate holding com- panies in the utility bill might give some s. harder jolt than expected earlier. Measured by the Associated Press average of 60 stocks, the market gave up .9 of s point, clos- ing at 47.8. 'I‘ra.d1i‘ig was consider- ably more active than on Friday with a total of 1,124,960 shares changing hands in the two-hour week-crid session. Financial sentiment was mixed concerning the final phase of the Congressional session. Some were uneasy over the possible upshot of the sh:-.rply debated legislation re- cently passed. Others said that with Congress in recess until next January some sections of business might cast. off timidity. Both the common and preferred shares of utilities were washed downstream by selling, but the former held losses to modest pro- portions. Losscs of l or more points were turned in by Chrysler at 59 3-8, International Harvester Rt. 53 3-4, Kennccott at 22, Montgomery Ward at 33 3-4, and Westinghouse at 65 3,-8. U. S. Steel Preferred was down 2 points at 110, Among Canadian issues St. Regis Paper Preferred declined 3 points, International Hydro Electric Pre- ferred 2. Ford of Canada. 1, while Dome Mines, Canadian Pacific. Distillers Scagrams, Massey Harris and Wright Hargreaves receded fractionally. Amongst those which made slight advancements were Dominion Stores, Nlpissing and Lake Shore. ' The bond market was narrow and easy throughout the list, but U. S. government obligations re- covered for modest net, gains.
