Thsfour-oared race, in working boats. will be contested by two crews from Hali fax, onefrom St. John, one from Charlotte town, and probably one from Souris, The crews, we learn, are first class amateurs. All are erto win, and a comtest may be ex- pected which will in itself be equal to a whole regatta. The deuble scull race will also be a good one, In it Halifax, Picton and Char- lettetown wili -be well represented. In the single scull'ng race Halifax will have another representative, Fictou will alse have one, Charlottetown three or four, and possibly St. John may send one or two. The sailing races cannot fail to be successful. We hear of Many second class boats fitting up to take part in it. (On the whole the regatta has every prospect of success, and the energetic eommittee who have it in hand will lose no opportunity te make it the best ever held on Hillsborough. stenanibiilielal Aw Exutna Brorars.—We seldom see meanness and dishonesty combined in one person in a more striking manuer than that shown by the followieg circnusstances : During Dominion Exhibition w a horse was taken from the Island to ifax by steamer and rail. Arrived at Halifax, the official demanded of the owner, the freight. But the owner assured him that the horse was to be shown with the reat of the island exhibit, and that the Government Comwis- sioners would foot the bill. On this assur- ance he was permitted to pass. He then He then went to the stables on the exhibi- \bition grounds, and put up and fed his animal. Mr. Gardiner was not aware of his presence three till a demand was made ‘for the unpaid freight. As the horse hadn't been consigned te him, atid was not for ex- hibition purposes, he refused to pay the bill. The owner, having in the meantime sold the animal, smuggled him away; and so the freight had to be made up by the poor official who allowed him te pass. The ap green of this piece of small rascality , We regret to say, an Islander. We know ‘the man well. If the amount of the freight Ws not within ene week ‘sent to this office | or te Mr. Gardiner, to be forwarded to the |’ oflicial who was taken in, we shall publish hismame and the place of his residence in full, and have the same published in the rest of the Maritime Province papers.
