Members of the University Community, Recent unfortunate events have dictated the necessity of this, a formal apology and a clarification of the Student Union’s position. The October 16 issues of The Gem, the Student Union- published newspaper, was of- fensive and insulting to many. Certainly there was material included in that issue which should never have been printed. On behalf of the Stu- dent Union, we apologize to all for the errors which have been made. This week’s Gem was the culmination of numerous communication problems among and between the Gem staff and the Student Union. _ .#As a result, the resignation of ‘the editor was accepted on October 19. Dear Editor, Regarding our ‘‘View From The Top’’ page in last week’s Gem, we, the engineers wish to offer our sincerest apologies ‘to those that we offended. When we put our page to- gether last week, we thought a few of our articles (namely ‘Poets Corner’ and ‘Why Beer Is Better Than Some Women’) were funny at the time but looking back, we really regret putting them in. It was never It is regrettable that it took such a distasteful event for the impetus to be provided to solve the problems which had existed. However, readers may be assured that actions are being taken to guarantee that incidents such as this one do not again occur. The offensive material should in no way be interpreted as a reflection of the Student Union or the Uni- versity community. The views outlined in several Gem articles last week -have no support within the Student Union or the University as a whole. our intention to degrade or in- sult women in any way. We thought we were making a joke and trying to make people laugh. We aren’t trying to defend our actions; we made a mistake and its all in - the past now. All we can do is try to repair some of the da- mage we have done. There are a few people who took all the heat for our actions and who were wrong- fully abused because of our actions. Our professors, Mr. Gillis and Mr. MacEwen, took Again we emphasize our sincere apology for this un- fortunate incident. Academic a lot of abuse from people complaining about their stu- dent’s actions. These two men had and have never had any- thing to do with ‘‘The View From The Top’’. If anyone takes offense to our attempted humour, they should talk to us, the students. To the women on campus who took our page seriously and were offended, we offer our sincere apologies again. But we feel that it is we who have degraded ourselves by putting in the offensive ma- terial. We made a judgement that our material wasn’t all that bad but we were wrong. We made a mistake.
