J. Duffy, l-lsw- thorne ‘Avenum-Charlottewwn, on Thursday. October 9th. came as a great shock to ali.. The deceased had been in hisususl good health until several days before his de- mise when he suffered a heart at- tack while working in hieygarden. However he recovered from this and was about as usual until Thursday when a second attack proved fatal. _ The deceased was born in “Fort Augustus, PEI. on November 19th. i818 - the son of the late James P. and Mrs. Duffy - the latter being formerly Catherine Hughes. at the rural school and later at- tended and graduated from Prince of Wales College. Subsequent to this he taught school successfully ~for lix years. Later he took up s position with the Dry Goods firm of B. A. MacDonald in this city and for eleven years was an effic- ient employee of this thriving con- cern being in charge of the Men's Iteady-to-wear Department when ' he resigned to accept a position in the Charlottetown Post Office. Here he became familiar and offic- ient in all branches of postal work being cierk-in-charge of the Money Order Department at the time of nis Superannuation. During the few short years he had been spared to enjoy his well earned retirement. he had not been idle but had been busily engaged beautifying his magnificent residence at Haw- thorne Avenue which stands to- day as a. tangible example to all of what can be accomplished in the making of a beautiful home Truly it can be said oi the late Mr. Duffy that he was an honest man. a genial companion. a faith- iul worker and a true friend.- Many will indeed miss his genial smile and his warm hand clasp. He was a strong supporter of the Conservative party and always wol: a deep interest in the affairs of his country. Few people had a wid- er generafknowledge than he and it was truly a pleasure to converse with him. He took an active part in the promotion of any project for the welfare of the country and was also a member of the Benevolent Irish Society and the Knights of Columbus. The late Mr. Duffy was a da- voted Roman Catholic and his place was seldom vacant at Mass in the Basilica. Ha was moreover a con- scientious worker in religious ac- tivities and will be sorely missed by his fellow laymen. He leaves to mourn a. sorrowlng "life and two sisters. Sister Es- tella of Lebanon, N. H, USA. and Mrs. Sheehan of this city. The tangible tributes to his memory consisting of floral wreaths Mass Cards. apiu-ituai Bouquets, letters and cards of sympathy were many and varied attesting to the high esteem in which the deceas- ed was held by his many friends. ' His funeral took place on Mon~ day, October 13th, from his late .esldence_ Hawthorne Avenue. to Saint Dunstans Basilica where Solemn High Mass of Requiem waa celebrated by the pastor. Rev. Dr. P. McMahon. assisted by Rev. P. l‘. MacDonald as deacon and Rev. David McTague as subdeacon. Present in the Sanctuary were His Excellency Bishop Boyle, Msgr. Maurice MacDonald. Rev. Ronald MacDonald, PIE. East Point and Rev. loula Callaghan. P.P., Fort Augustus. The hearse was preceded i0 the Basilica by members of the Benevolent Irish Society and by members of the Knights of Col- umbpa. The honorary pallbearers were: Dr. WJP. MacMillan. W. Cheater B.
