Through ihe kindness of the genial pixiprietor, Mr. E. R. Brow, we were driven out from Charlottetown to the above-named farm, and had the pleasure of looking over his beautiful herd of Guertseys, which have won a reputa- tion for themselves at marry of the lead- ing shows in Canada. Thi sfarni is sii- uatid four miles east of Charlottetown. and being somewhat elevated takes iis 1 name from the splendid view io be had 'of the country lying to the eastward. It contains 210 acres of good arable land. The soil is a sharp clay and is natur- ally well drainid. and produces good crops of grain and roots. The build- ings are well adapted for a dairy farm The cattle barn is a cimmodious struct- ure, with the stables and storage for roots in the basement. There were thirty-tive milch cows in the stables at the time of our visit. thirteen of which are pute~bred Gui-rnseys of one of the beet milking strains in Canada. The balance of the herd consists of high- grade Guernseys and Jerseys, together with a lot of young pedigreed stock. Isaleigh Conqueror is the stock bull used at present. He was bred at Isa- leigh Grange, Quebec. and is a a grand dairy sire of good Gu-russy type-,plenty of size and good constitution the young Stock from him are vtgcrcus and thrifty. Such a. statemf ut would carry little weight unless fully subslau. listed, by figures and oiher data. ‘-Ot course there is room] or criticism. The problem of what is bsst to put into a ship io make her an eliicient fighting unit is one of tremenious d fliculty. That our ships are uiiderarmed is not only my opinion. but that of many. oiher naval officers. Compare the Cressy _class with the ships being built by Arm- strong for foreign governments. The O‘Higgins is enormously super or in armament to thc (jressy class. It is all very well having coal, and for coal we sacrifice guns, but the point is that when we get into [action the ship . with ihe heaviest armament is certain to win. “I know the whole thing is a matter of compromise, but that we have weak spc-ts in our ships -nero my opinion is that of n1~zny_ others. “I think that the unarmed American admiral is wrong in his criticism of the Canopus. I do not believe any nation is likely to boat us in making armor, guns, or in rapidity of building war ships F or years I have been in favor of vertical armor. because it causes the enemy’s shell io burst outside thc ship. _ “One thing I think our government has done well is that we have created regular squadrons of destroyers. for. although the present war has not afforded adequate scope in judging of the effect of torpedoes, there is no doubt, in my mind, that the most recent invention. the gyroscope, has rendered the mobile torpedo a hundred times more fi rmidable than before. The future wi 1 see whole squadrons of tor- pedoes tilted with the gyroscope lot loose upon the enemy, and if oniy one should strike the ship it would no all up with her, Hence. the eziorni Jus and growing importance of the torpedo ;and, per contra. ot the destroyer.” In regard lo navaljiessons to be learn- ned from the latest naval events, it' was diffcult to get Lord Charles to express an opinion, but he said: ‘-Now. more tziau ever, it is. abun- dantly clear ihit what the war ship has to fear most is the Shell and not the shot.” His lordship continued : “From what I read it is evident thai whenever the Americans have gone into action their artillery fire have been ex- cellent, and also that the Americans have exhibited to the full extent the qualities of gallautry and endurance inherent in the Anglo~Sa.xon race. It is hardly fare to criticize tho Spaniards in their misfortunes, but if. is patent that they showed their old intrepidity land sturdy fighting qualities under the most adverse circumstance-s." Lord Charles intends to make a trip to the United States with Lady Beres- ford duiing the coming autumn. WORSE THAN YELLOW FEVER Kidney Disease Man’s Deadliest Foe. Dodd’s Kidney Pills its Only Cure.
