Desmond Burke, 4'7-year-old Toronto marksman, won the covet- ed Governor-Generalhs gold medal match Saturday at the lmh annunl Dominion of Canada Rifle Asso- ciation shoot. The short, stocky Doctor posted is. record score of 114 out of a. pos- sible l'l5 from the 300. 600 and 900 yard ranges in n. drizzling rain to beat out 140 other marksman who qualified to enter the match Thur- sday. Recognized -by many as the best shot Canada has ever had, Burke is the only rlfleman ever to win both the King's prize at Bisley and the Govemor-Generals gold medal. In addition, he is the record holder of the King's medal here, having won it eight times in all. Burhe pumped 15 straight bulls- eyee into the target from 900 yards after posting one off the possible from 300 and 600 yards. His only inner came on his third shot from the 600-yard range. In keeping with tradition. the happy champion was chaired and carried from the firing range as e. heavy downpour started. An Ot- tawa army band led the way to the presentation stand where he was presented with the gold medal by Defence Minister Claxton. Three other Canadians finished the match with 1715.. They were Maj. Bracken, Brockvllle, Ont. -n - local Mixed Doubles Tennis Tille Decided , The Mixed Doubles championship was decided at the Charlottetown courts on Saturday when Ned Wren and Helen Larter teamed up to win the event. Early in the after- noon they eliminated Ivan Dawl- ing and Wanda MecMillan by the scores 8-6, 5-7. 8-4. Later in the day they won the finale taking two sets 8-6, 6-2 from Carl Bradley and Elizabeth Wlllet. Also on Saturday a eemi-final match was played in the Men's Doubles. P. Kaye and D. George bowed out to J. Johnston and ,W. Cullen 3-e. 6-4, 9-7. 6-1. On Sun- day. Johnston and Cullen met I. Dowllng and P. O'Meare. accomplished an un- usual feat this year when he won the British Oonsois Trophy by driving only horses out or his own barn. 0'Meara has 12 horses in his stable and drove in of them last. wcelc to gain his '17 points.
