He quotes the figures of Mr. Dunning that the national debt has been decreased by $257,000,000 during the last six years and that taxaxtion to the amount of $118,000,000 has been remitted during this period. On these two grounds ho bases his claims of Canada's prosperity. Record unemployment, decreased exports and an unfavorable trade balange are passed over as unworthy of comment. It is worth while to examine the two claims. Towards the sum of $257,000,000 by which the public debt has been reduced. - Co. $45,437,000 came from the repayment of loans duc Canada, $93,270,000 came from interest 0n investments. $8,629,000 came from banking operations. These sums made a total of $147,000,000 which cams to the Government without effort and without taxation. It was extraordinary revenue-d. treasury windfall. Deduct this amount o! $147,000,000 from the total debt reduction and net debt reduction raised by taxation was 0110000000. What then has the Government raised in taxation during the six years in which it has paid $110 000,0 00 of the national debt compared with the amount raised by taxation during the six years of Conservative administration previous to 1921 when Premier King assumed office. The following figures are furnished by the assistant Deputy Minister cf Finance from the official records of his department: the Conservative Llbtrfll 191s . . . . . . . . . . .. $124,666,969 i925 $293,574,518 11 . . $114,159,429 192s $321,575,013 1918'. $196,720,976 1921 .. $346,649,212 1919 . . szassssnao 192s .. . $364,705,803 19,10 . $293,914,101 1920 $994,614,141 1921 . . . . . . . . . . .. $369,110,499 19x0 $218,321,000 lOfliclal estimate: So that in order to pay off the $110,000,000 of the national debt apart from the sum which came without taxation the Liberals have collected $713.- 0001100 more in taxes in six normal-peace years of boastcd prosperity than the Conservatives collected in six abnormal war and post war years. Yet in the face of these official figures the Government boasts that under the direction of the "architect of prosperity‘ ‘they hive rtfllliwd W?!‘ ation to the amount of $118,000,000 during the last six years.
