Mr. Herbert Hankinson, dwuty town clerk. who prosecuted, said 1 the inspector called at the defendant s I shop and purchased samples of baking powder. There were two kinds on sale. The article described as the best was sold _i at 2d. for four ounces. and the cheaper ` kind was sold at 2d. for a half a pound. The cheaper sample when analysed was found to be adulterated with Z) per cent of alum. The use of alum in making bread was injurious to health, and it was ‘sodas a cheap -.substitute for tartaric aoid. Alum in bread liberated the ga ami made the bread rise, but it was in- jurious to children. The Bradford Cor poration was determined to put a stop to these adulterations, which pressed especi-` ally hard upon the poor. The defendant said that he purchased the baking powder. ready made up in packets, and did not know that it was adulterated. A Hue of _ § and costs was imposed.-London l Grocer, Dec. 15. ___._}i.
