There is a learned nati In Miehigan who would rather have a rare speci- men from the animal, vegetable or mineral kingdom than a high political office. Working for him is a sympa- thetic son of Erin who professes as much interest as though he knew all about these things, a bit of shrewd- hess that nets him many favors. The other day he went rushing to his em- ployer with a letter stating that it was from his brother Mike, a coal miner in Ohio, telling how they had dug out a serpent turned to stone 50 feet long and as thick as a barrel. The savant never stopped to read. Tic took the first train and reached the little mining town by the shortest route. The next evening he was back and only inted when his eager em- ployee greeted him. “Did yez tind the schnake?’ ventur- ed his man. “Yes. The snake in the case is that brother of yours. He’s the greatest liar unhung. His serpent 50 feet long and as thick as a barrel was the petrified root of a tree 13 inches in length and half an inch in diameter.” “There’s no loirs ay our name, sov. The Island is Mr. Vanbuskirk’s native province, aod he bas visited it a good many times since remov- iug to New Brunswick, but he says he never ‘aw Buch abundant crops as he saw thisyear. Grain and hay were especially abundant, but the potato crop is also large and of good quality. The big storm beat the grain in some places and mhere ripe enough shelled it badly, one farmer esti- mating his loss in this way at one hundred bushels of wheat alone. The crop is so enormous, however, that the joss in this way is ecarcely felt. - Moncton Times.
