Quebec Budget ls _'Record High QUEBEC (CP)-The provincial government has brought down record expenditure estimates of‘- $506,537,400 fo‘r the 1958-59 fiscal year beginning April 1. Finance Minister Onesime Gag- non tabled the estimates in the legislative assembly Tuesday. They c all for expenditures’ roughly $35,000,000 higher than estimated for the current fiscal year. : Estimates for 1957-58 totalled $482,911,360 - nearly $100,000,000 higher than for «the 1956-57 term. The increase was sue to the start of equalization payments by the federal government and higher corporation income' taxes. The relatively small increase forecast for the coming term in- dica.tes «the government is not planning new taxes. WELFARE INCREASE Mr. Gagnon listed increased ex- penditure--in nearly every-goverm men_t department. Most impor- tant increases were earmarked social welfare, education and roads. Social welfare is up to $75,453,- 000 from $43,363,000, making it the third largest budget item. The department is taking over social assistance duties from the health department whose credits are dropping to $67,897,000 from $83,- 407,000. . “ 1 No estimate of anticipated rev- enue is made at this time. The finance minister will outline this in his budget‘ speech eypectedi earlier -than usual this year. It is widely that the speech may be delivered by Welfare Minister Paul Sauve. Combines In - Roofing Bring Fines For 3 - TORONTO (CP) A three- year investigation has resulted in ’ fines totalling $110,000 ‘against 11 roofing firms who conducted a $30,000,000 - a year combine from 1932 to 1952. They were fined :11 maximum. $10,000 each Tuesday after they pleaded guilty before Chief Justice J. C. McRu'er of the Ontario Su- preme Court. The companies fined included six from Quebec and three from Ontario including Canadian Gypsum Company Limited of To- ronto which also has a branch in Windsor, N.S. .
