April 21 - (AP) - Steel production lumped last week but "how quickly you can ilet steel depends on what you want. and what. you want. to pay for it," steel magazine says today. The metal-working journal re- ports that "if you want. large size carbon bars or heavy plates. you'll have to wait awhile. If you want wire or straight chrome grades of stainless sheets . . . you'll get qulcir delivery." A large part of the production of carbon bars and heavy plates is being taken by the military. Cal'- bon bars are used for supports and for items such as automobile shafts. Plates are used for arms- ments. ships, railroad ears. tanks and bridges. Before the United Steelworkers (C.1'.0.) threatened a strike anti furnaces were cooled, production reached a high of 102.5 per cent of that capacity. The week before last 4- after the government seizure -- production was at. 96.5 per cerii. Last week it went. up to 100.5 per cent. Grain z WINIPEG. April 27 - (GP) Prices generally showed an easier tone Saturday in a moderately ac- tive session of the Winnipeg urain Exchange. More liberal hedging, the increas- ed harvest. tempo on the prairies and hesitation on U. S. markets were factors in the trend. Commercial demand-was limited to shipping orders in oats and bar- ley. There also was it little export. business in barley. some seaboard demand for flax was indicated. Prices for class two and I.W.A wheat. were unchanged.
