VINCENT _DOIRON in collision repair Marked Progress In Program Of Artificial Insemination An increase of almost five thousand cows, artifically bred, was‘ attained last year over the previous year’s operation, declar- ed Dr. George C. Fisher who directs -the artificial breeding programme for the P.E.I. De- partment of Agriculture, speak- ing yesterday at the annual Dairymen’s Association meeting In Charlotteown. He outlined the development of the present artificial breeding prog£ramme in cattle, which be- gun with one club, the Eastern Prince County Artificial Breed- ing Club, in May 1955. Since that time twelve more clubs have been established. Membership in the various clubs is open to all cattle breed- ers in the Province. Ten breeds are available daily in each Club he said. These breeds represent the dairy, dual purpose and beef breeds. The breeds available are: Holstein, COMING EVENTS Food sale today Simpsons-Sears 2.30 p.m New Haven W.I. SIRE SELECTION Dr. Fisher stated that the mat- ter of sireselection was of deep concern to all_artificial breeding units. The present bull battery of some fifty bulls is maintained at Fredericton, N.B. by the N.B. Artificial Breeding Co-op Ltd. The system of sire selection was laid down recently at a meeting of all sire selection committees held in Moncton. These committees are composed of representatives from P. E. I. and NB. for each of the breeds. Altogether there are five estab- lished namely: Holstein, Ayr- shire, Jersey, Guernsey and a combined Beet committee. This latter committee deals with the selection for. all beef breeds. FIRST IN CANADA Prince Edward Island is the first in Canada to offer the ser- vices of artificial breeding to cattle owners Province wide. The thirteen clubs from west to east extend service daily including Sundays to the Breeders. The Clubs are the West Prince Arti- ficial Breeding Club, O’Leary and District, Tyne Valley and District, Eastern Prince County, Kensington and District, Crapaud and District, New Glasgow and District, Cornwall and District, York and District, Hillsboro and District, Morell apd District, Montague and District and the Eastern Kings‘ Artificial Breed- ing Club. SELECTED MATINGS A few years ago techniques were developed whereby bull semen could be frozen. It is main- tained at temperatures lower than 120 degrees below zero fab- renheit. The storage of semen is then made possible over long periods. To date semen has been stored over five years and then used ‘to successfully breed cows. This means that cattle owners with the more recently announ- can can for one particular sire they feel will best. fit into their blood lines. Extended pedigrees on all sire are available through the Inseminator. These also in- clude a picture of the bull in an attractively dlisplayed Sire Cata- logue. The future of artificial insemi- nation in Prince Edward Island has a bright outlook, the speaker said. It will continue to provide superior sires wiith the best available breeding background. By combining this programme ced dairy herd improvement policy, that of weiging and testing of milk, careful planning and building of the herd can be developed. . _ It is impossible Dr. Fisher said, to know the production, both milk and fat, without systematic weigh- ing and testing. The breeding of the better dairy cows to straight dairy bulls will perpetuate the more profitable strains within the herd. The low producing cows can be bred to beef bulls of the own- ers choice, thus producing a cross which will give greater and faster gains. This type of a programme will enable the breeder within a few years, to build a dairy herd on known production of both milk and butter fat. runny, March 14,1953 The Guardian Page 3’ St. Pius X Club Elects Officers Joe Murphy was re-elected pre- sident of St. Pius X Club at the first annual meeting of the or- ganization held on Wedn-esda evening in the church hall. .
