     A new Whelan Memorial Building has arisen from the ashes 
     
     of'the old and stands In the business section of the City on 
     
     iGrafton Street. . 
     
    

    
     The new brick structure bears testimony to the enterprise of 
     
     the members of the Benevolent lrlsh Society who suffered such 
     
     a setback In the fire over a year ago. Their then comparatively 
     
     new quarters was razed to the ground. 
     
    

    
     The President of the Society is E. W. Hogan. The Patron in

     The entire second iloor is being 
     
     occupied by the law firm of 
     
     Matheson, Peske and Nicholson. It

     It is interesting to note that the 
     
     Society is 127 years old. It was in- 
     
    
   
   
    
     corporated under the laws of 
     
    
   
   
    
     of the Building Committee is 
     
    
   
   
    
     Prince Edward Island in 1825. 
     
    

    
     The Society was established in 
     
     Charlottetown under the patronage 
     
     of His Excellency Col. John 
     
     Ready, an Irishman of great (I15- 
     
     tinctlon who arrived here in 1324 
     
     as lieutenant-governor. 
     
    

    
     The building was named in 
     
     honor of the Hon. Edward Whelan. 
     
     a former president of the Society 
     
     and also one of the Father's oi 
     
     Confederation. 
     
    

    
     The county Construction Com- 
     
     pany erected the building and 
     
     were the general contractors. Wli'- 
     
     ing was done by the Redmond 
     
     Electric while the plumbing and 
     
     heating was Installed by W. L. 
     
    
   
   
    
     McKenna and, Company. The 
     
     painting was done by Be;-mud 
     
     Callaghan.
