The very blossom she had plucked that day, And, at her father’s voice, away. Around me lay. Still bright and blooming in these eyes of mine ; And as I gathered each one eagerly I pressed it to my lips and drank the wine Her kisses left there for the honeybee. Then after I had laid them with the tress Of her bright hair, with lingered ten- derness. I, turning, crept on to the edge that bound Her pleasant seeming home—but all around Was never sign of her ! The windows all Were blinded ; and I heard no rip- pling fall Of her glad laugh, voice call! But clutching to the tangled grasses, caught A sound asthough a bowed his head And sobbed alone—unloved—un- comforted | And then straightaway before My tearless eyes, all vividly wrought A vision that is with me evermore ; A little girl that lies asleep, nor hears, No heeds not any voice, nor fall of tears, And I sit singing o’er and o’er: “God called her in from him and shut the door.” —James Whitcomb Riley had cast nor any harsh strong man was Trimmed Lamps. It is not enough that lamps be filled with oil; they must be trimmed. It is not enough, either, that they be light- ed : they must be trimmed. Grace in a heart lighted with holy fire is not enough, ‘The lamp must be trimmed. Untrimmed lamps are lamps that, while better than no lamps, are not much better. Secret prayer, holy meditation, the reading of God’s Word, the means of grace, personal labor for Christ, are the means by which we keep our lights trimmed. Trimming the lights does not take the place of oil or fire, but it makes more of the oil and fire. Trimm- ing the spiritual lamp does not give salvation, but it renders our light more effective and serviceable to those who need it. Some try in vain to make a light without any oil or fire.
