ee ee AMINE R, | 1883. ee —_——- —— The Rises Ex MAY 15, The Coet of Neglect AvsTRALIA, or that part of it which constitutes the Colony of Victoria, is scourged by what was ‘alw ays considered a barmless animal, st least io Britain. | Sonietime during the early settlement of the Colony, a few pairs of Eu: glish Rab- bits were introduced, and the soil, climate and subsistence has proved so congenial to these rodents that they have increased pumbers, to be- come a great uuisance, aud are causing alarming destruction of crops. The| stock inspector of New South Wales is authority for the statement that the pest of rxbbité#has already cost the Colony of Victoria be » $20,000,000 and 5 000.000. aud that it is still spreading. | New South Wales lies directly north of | Victoria, adjoiming, and the authorities | of the former view with alarm | the scourge of rabbits which aftiicts their | sister colony io the south, and are devis- iug Measures to preven it if possible the ju such astonishing as tween serious apread of the destructive pest throughout | New South Wales. Rew ards are ofter- ed tor methods o> inventions for the| wholesale destruct.on of the rabbits, and | numerous attempts have been made in | that direction. but so far have proved inad+ quate, if pot signal failures. liere we have a lesson for the people of eur Islaud. In the early days of the rabbit pest these rodents might have been exterminated by united action on the part of the farmers, but through neglect the evil has become so gigantic that the pros- perity of the Australian Colovies its threatened ; aud no doubt those who i through the press or otherwise, urged atteution to the growing rabLit suisauce, were laughed at, or sneered at, by those who vow see nothipg comical in the tact that their crops are being annually in- jured or destroyed, aud the proceeds of their hard toil dissipated by an insidious enemy difficuit to combat. Negle ‘ct to stamp out the pest, which scourges the Australian Colonies, in its earlier stages, now causes av annual loss of millions, and cousequeut alarm i constervation amovgst the farmers and} colonisis generally. Shall this be the parallel record, writien by later editors of newspapers, wheu speaking of the spread of the potato bug pest here, of the course pur- sued by, and the bard fate resuling there- trom, of the farmers of P. E. Island. Shailit be said that they were so in different or so parsimonious tuat they retused or neglected to spend a few hundred dollars to exterminate the potato bug ata time when they might easily have dove so? Shall the future editor state that Onur farmers preferred to spend thousands of dollars iu Paris Green and in ‘abor in fightiog the bugs, rather than subscribe a tew hundred to stamp out the pest decidedly and effectually, when they were weak in numbers? Neglect to take prompt, decided, efectual measures for the extermivation of the potato bug will be a blunder; and as one of Britaiv’ s greatest warriors ex- pressed himself, iu speaking of military movements aud the responsibility of leaders: “A blunder is worse than a crime.” The whole situation may be summed up in a nutshell. Nature has isolated the Isiand from the maiuland so far as to place the Straits between the two While it is notorious that the bug easily crosses creeks aud even wide rivers by various wethods, yet it is impossible for it to reach the Island except by being carelessly Lrought here: It can never reach here in numbers. So far few have been observed here. It is true that a few have appeared io several sections of the Island. The few may be readily destroyed if proper means are adopted. To neglect to adopt these means will be iv the highest degree criminal; and these measures must be _ instituted and eflectually carried out the coming se#son, ifpot, the bug will have got a foothold forever. __—e om + anne Tre Patriot in discussing the King’s Cc uty Election case, says :—** Had Dr. Robertson uot conested the election, it is Ovly fair to assume that Dr. Mclutyre’s colleagne would have defeated Mr. A. ©.
