This nev- er-enuding repetition of Island baadalll championships. Let up. fellows. and give someone else a chuibe to cop a little glory. 1947. 1013. 109. 1&0. lwl. All these years summerside teams have won llsland intermediate champ- ionahi-ps. in 1.947, they were de- feated in a sudden-death game ll. Windsor by the Meteghan team. In 1016 they beat Chat- ham. 3.. and then Woodside. N. S. In 1949, they disposed of Meteehan. N. s.. and finally. Clutham, N. B. In 1960 they trtnuriod Clark's I-laitbour. N. S.. and I eomlbinaition of rain and Minto reluctance to engage the perennial Maritime champs gave the. season an un-saliafactaory end- inlnbut Summei-side was still Maritime champs. because no team had taken that proud title from them. Once again they.ai-e ready to defend their tri-province crown. The fact of their winning this long succession of championships is no more remarkable than the manner in which they won them. Nearly always they let the is- land series go to what the tennis boys and girls call "set point" against them before they wake up and proceed to take the honors. That was the situation this year. The Arbbiea were leading in games 2 to 1 with one more vic- iory needed to win the title. ,In the next game the Capital City boys are leading '1 to 2 with two innings to go before darkness. Was there anyone in that crowd at the Recreation Grounds dia- mond at that stage of the pro- codings who would have wager- ed I plugged nickel on the Hol- man team's chances of pulling the championship out of the very hot fire. Lots of cagey bcttors would have given you 20 to l. or more. that the series was as good as over. It looked very much like Hol- man's wasn't going to be able to "guinantee satisfaction" to their fans on that occasion. But they roared back into contention and managed to tie up the ball game at 7-all. This gave them a breathing space, though the row they had still to hoe was long and hard. They had to beat the Ab- biee twice in a row in Charlotte- town to turn the trick. You've got to hand it to that kind of battlers. ...... To all. the boys go a lot of credit for this never-say-die spirit they have shown. But most of all to Alan Stewart, a boy just graduated from junior ranks. who won all three of the Holman ag- gregation! victories. Last year this same bory.won two games from the Charlottetown Falcons in the Island finals. one game from Clark's Harbour in the P.E.I.-N.S. series, two games from St. John Juniors in the finals of the Maritime junior champion- ship. That makes eight champ- ionship games won without a single lose in a stretch of two Y0Bl'5- He may add to that re- cord before the 1&1 season ends but if he does not. it in still the Pictured above sitting. left to Standing. left. to best pitching record we've heard of in these parts. If- anyone knows of a better record. we'd like to hear about it. To lhe airforce boys who were on this year's champions must go a goodly share of the credit for victory. Thcy pulled more than their weight and frankly we were surprised "at the caliber of ball they dished out during the Ab- bic-Holman series. Don "Moose" Catson. basclballs "Old Man Riv- er" was never better than he was in this series. He delivered A couple of important clutch hits and his fielding was little short of sensational. Bulb Barlow. who had a great year in the Sum- merslde Town League. came up' with more balls thrown into the dirt and spurred more throws high and to his right and left than you generally see in an is- land final series. l-l.unler's hit- ting was always a contributing factor in victory and. his catch- ing lett. nothing to be desired. Don Mackenzie ran the gamut from brilliance to unsteadlness in the field. but his bludgeon-wield- ing helped to cut the Charlotte- town flingers down to size. Paul Schurman, the only junior used in the intermediate series. after a disastrous batting slump which carried him well tliroligli the junior finals. came to life just in time to help the Holman team to victory.
