Winter carnival '78, the most gala of all events at the university, is blowing our way and promises to hit with a full blizzard of : races, sports, dances, parties, assorted riotous events, and a few less important things as well. Winter Carnival ' 78 chair— man, Gerald McKenna, and his committee of more than twenty helpers have organ— ized a full week of celebra- tions that will make the ‘famous Quebec Carnival: look stormed-out by com- parison. Everything gets started with a flurry of activity on Sunday, Jan. 22 when the snow-sculpting starts (with a bit of luck) . In— tramural sports occupy a good deal of time Sunday afternoon and continue Mon— day, finishing on Tuesday. Sunday night at 8, the Mel Brooks classic Blazing Saddle; will be shown in mf- fy Amphitheatre. On Tuesday, the blizzard hits with full force. (11 Wed— nesday , people on campus at noon will find entertainment v. Hoopee basketball game takes place. Following that, all students will be invited to come to a pub in the Barn. The pub will recall the fabulous fifties so everybody is expected to break out the grease and bobby socks. Prizes for the greasiest couple will be a— warded. Residence students will have the chance to be greasy for several hours as supper in the cafeteria that night will be for greas— ers only. Wednesday night will see a Bash in the gym featuring "Friends". For those people who prefer a quieter atmosphere, the Exchange coffee house in the Chaplaincy Centre will be open to everybody. Ch Thurs— day, the regular collection of clowns will congregate in the Barn to witness and par— ticipate in such carnival Classics as the tug-o-wan, the talent pub, tricycle races, pie—throwing con- test, etc. The campus can- didates for "Biceps of the Year Awar " will test their prowess in the bench-press tournament in the Barn. "Sylvester Stretch" will pro» vine music for the Bash in the gym, and a suicide skate in the rink from 1 — 3 a.m. will finish things (and perhaps a few participants) off for 'Ihur— sday. On Friday the annual fashion show will see the campus beauties strut their stuff in today's latest fas— hions. Both the men's and ladies‘ basketball teams play Acadia in the evening. Friday night is the grandest night of all with the annual Carnival Ball held at Confederation Centre. ‘Ti— ckets are only $6 per couple. "Pete Porter' 5 Quartet", a group of professional mus- . the UPEI Winter Carnival '73- tournaments, men's and women's basketball, a hockey game that pits the Panthers against Mt. Allison, a Bash in the gym featuring "Tracks", and the second suicide skate for the survivors of the first. Ch Sunday the Carnival ends with an avalanche of good times. A bus will leave for Brook- vale Ski Park at 9 a.m. and will return at 4:30 p.m. Any- body who enjoys cross—com- try or downhill skiing, or tobogganing will be looking forward to this. The final Carnival event is the Campus Cabaret at Confederation. cen- tre theatre on Sunday night. Winter carnivals have always been a big—eVent at UPEI , but Carnival '78 promises to beat them all.
