The Cadre, March 30, ‘1976, page’z' Reflections on Music, Fees, It is rather ironic to sit here at this typewriter, listening to CIMN throw six- ties rock 'n' roll at me while trying to think up some kind of editorial which .will convince students to do ‘ something about the tuition and residence fee bike which the university is trying to railroad over us. Yah, it's ironic that We dig up the music of the six— ‘ties while forgetting the Are High. Salaries “ lustflied? ' Dear Editor, In the issue of the Cadre Of March 23, Ron Baker poi- nted out that I had made an inaccurate statement concer- ning how much money faculty and administration make in relation to other civil ser- vants on P.E.I. I would like to take this opportunie ty to clear up this matter. The article that I submitted to the Cadre on March 16 stated that "Some" Faculty and Administrators make six to seven times more money than the average civil ser- vant on the Island. The Cadre however, accidently left out the word "Some" when the article was printed thus changing the whole context of the point that I was trying to make. The mistake that I did make was that I should have said "some faculty and administ- rators make 5-7 times more money than the average days macros. editorial J 'mood and the feeling the mu-‘ sic was supposed to repres- =ent. Those were heady years then — years of radicalism and idealism on campus, yes tars when students stood up- for what they believed, yen ars when students believed they could do something ab- out the situation in which they found thémselves.’ Today? Listen to the un- dercurrents in the Barn and Islander." Anyways, the whole jist of the point that I was trying to make was that if the University 1 of P.E.I. had to go to the Island community because it needed more money to . ‘ keep the university open, ‘ could those university fac- ulty and administrators who make more money than the average Islander justify thr eir higher salaries in terms of their contribution «to the P.E.I. community. Thus certainly questions the legitimacy of salary di— stributions based on contri— bution on one's society, a problem that we should cer- tainly entertain if we are to find out the real reasons why our society is so stra— tified. I would also like to take this time to commend Ron Baker for successfully dive— rting attention away frOm ' the main points that I was trying to make in my artic— le titled Solutions Requir— ed Concentrated, NOT part- Tine Effort. You were acc— urate in pointing out a mi- stake in my article, but you did not comment on the val— idity of what the entire ar- ticle was Suggesting. The point that I was trying to make,Ron was that the? way in which U.P.E.I. is being administered at preSent, is not working as well as it could. The reason why it is not working as well as it’ could is because we do not' have a soul for this learni- ng environment. As stated in the Aims and Objectives Report,"No society or unive— rsity will successfully re- Hsolve its internal conflicts "Mamas '- «Jana» the Residences. "Fee hikes (substitute: if you: star- vation, war, pollution, ex— ploitation, etc.)? Well, ther's nothin' you can do about them. By the way who's playing at the Pig?" . Where is the activism of the sixties? Why does the music pulse memories in my ear while the guy next to me wants a buck for a beer? Why do I consider his re- quest for a buck more impor- tant than the message the. music is trying to get ac— ross? 1 Perhaps the most tragic thing about our generation is the turpor into which it has withdrawn. We have drawn nothing from the sixties ex- cept those things which make the turpor easier to maint— Ihain — dope, loud music, etc. Yet the single most im— ~ portant characteristic of ' if its only asset is clever—l ness in the management of these conflicts. It must also have compelling goals that are shared by conflic- ting parties and it must a1?» _so_have a sense of movement" V, I. ‘ "payer ~money to keep towards these gOals." Therefore, we need a Soul in this university, a soul that will give us aim, pur— pose, direction and meaning in search for our moral, ph- ysical, Spiritual, and inte—~ llectual'self-fulfillment. The time has come when we? must seriously ask ourselves And Boredom the sixties (or so everyone says) is that it was aftimeh for liberation of the-human spirit. The spirit they lib— erated seems distressingly like the ones which preceed— ed it. If we do continue on in the turpor, then we'll gain not only the boredom of the fifties but also the fear, the MacCarthyism, the mass hyteria. Fortunately we seem to have not yet taken on those characteristics.,Butl just wait. If we intend to follow up on the sixties' noble begin- ning (mistake-ridden though, it may have been) then we'd better take more from them- than their music; we need the spirit, the belief in life, yes even the idealism as well. The music, after all, was only an outgrowth of those iother’things., why this university is worth preserving and just what' akind~of university do all_; the members of the universi- ty and community want. We must also ask what is_our". justification fogjufignghq%% 'opened. “‘71? . Hence,‘solutions”réfififflg” a concentrated and not a part-time effort.
