Playing spectacular, fast, breath-taking: hockey fi. that made all other games this season fade into insigni cancc, the Rangers, actually skating their hearts out, came from behind in the third period to take their bitter rivals, the A115105. IMO Cami! by a 3-2 score and go one game up l_n the race for the junior hockey title and the W.R. Aitken 2¢Dhy» _ BRILLIANT GAME Words cannot describe the class, :bility and never-say-die efforts the two starry junior teams dispiayed last night. lt was a foregone con- clusion that the series would be a bitterly contested affair, but one could hnrdly expect. the youngsters to ,put on tho exhibition they did in last night‘s game. So good were the tennis that for moments last night the atmosphere in the Forum re- minded the inns of “Big Four” diiys. From the flrst face off to the iinal whistle it was a. lightning rest, brilliantly-played encounter, with the Rangers returned the win- ncrs; but even in victory they dldn’t look one bit better than their op- ponents. The Prowse-Williams crew captured that important first vic- tory last night but it is still an even bet on the outcome of what will he the most sensational junior ser- is ever staged in the city. ABBIES IN LEAD EARLY It took the Abbies not quite seven minutes to forge to the front last night as one of their fast-breaking' attacks bore fruit. and ended with Vince Grant hammering home the dtsc behind the sensational new Ranger goalie Vemon Peters, a. youngsters who despite playing in his first organized game gave a. performance that would do credit to a. veteran. The goal seemed to inspire both squads. and for the next forty minutes and u half it was a. thrill-pulsing, scoreless battle with the bottle shifting from end to end In the kaleidoscoplc whirl of hockey that the teams were playing. There were stars and more stars le the teams flashed up and down that frozen surface but it was a heavily padded figure who stood out like a beacon light, and that was the Abbie goalie young Keith Lengille. Time after time he performed bril- liantly as Rangers let loose with all manners of drives as they tried desperately for the equalizer and it was only after the seven minute mark had been passed in the third Aeriod that the youngster saw his irmor dented. Tough Break And it was it heart-breaking turn of fate that sent. the Rangers up on even terms with their opponents. Preming inside the Abbie line Ab McKinnon snared the disc and let drive with a blazing shot; Langille had the shot covered all the way but an Abbie defenceman attempt- lng to clear saw the puck deflect off his glove and lodge in the open corner of the net. The break mo'mei\i.:u~ily set the Abbies back on their heels and at the same time ignited the spark that sent. the Rangers :roaring iri- to action inorc determined than ever nrid in exactly live minutes, with goals spaced lwo and three minutes npnrl. they had jumped in- to the lead 3-1. “Buffer” Worth, the pinch-hitter of the Rangers when the going gels toughest took s beautiful pass from "Tnrky" Whit- lock in full stride nt the Abbie line and his sizzling drive bulleted into the net before Langille could make s. move. Three minutes later Worth figured in what proved to be the winning counter as he fed Mcilach- em ia. scoring pass and Bud letdrive with another shot that had goal written all over it all the way. Rangers, for the only time in the game had a. distinct edge on their opponents, but it did`n't last long as the Abbles turned on the power full force and went searching for goals in the last eight minutes. Wave upon wave of rod and while sweatered players raced into Ranger territory only to be tunicd back by stout. defensive work. Twice the Ab- bies were caughtfluiiootvcl to let Rangers coast in unmolestod but Langille was still there to tum the thrusts aside. But the eonselcss gouging attacks were bound to click some time and at 16:20 of the sos- sion Stan McCiintlck drew the Ab- bies up to within one goal ns ho scored from the corner of the crease after Peters had deflected Grlint's drive. Then for the last three min- utes and forty seconds oi’ the bril- linnt contested struggle two mighty tired teams. called on every bit of stamina. and courage they posses- sed; one defending their slim lead successfully while the other, losing nothing in defeat, tried unsuccess- fully to hurdle the barrier that the red and black s\veatm~l=d Ranger crew threw up in front. nf their net. And so ended it game that had brllliancy rvritteri all over it.. Never has the writer soon two junior teams turn in rt prrforiuaiicn like they did lnst night and should ihr:_\' continue to display that brand ol' hockey no matter what from is ro- turned the winner they me _:going to prove mighty tough obstacles to knod< Over for Maritime honors.
