Samuel Beaton took the chair and in a few well chosen remarks, ex- pressive of his pleasure in seeing so many present opened the meeting, when the following program was very efiiclently rendered to the entire satisfaction of I large and attentive audience: Chorus by Try Again choir. _ _ _ I' Tableau-Counting. the Cost uf thc First Glass. This scene was pre- sented in a very creditable manner by Ruth Crosby and Wendell Beaton. Bro. Beaton represented a young man silently gazing on the “first- glaes." which he held in an extend- ed quivering hand, while Sis. Crosby in spirited terms enumerated the many evils' that almost surely _follow the intosuating ~cup. In silence the audience awaited the young man'a decision, which was signidsd by his dashing the glass .with its contents to the ground. Address,-Rev. Daniel McLean. Solo.-J. A. Robertson (encored). God-Save the King., I The address by Rev. Mr. McLean, was listened to with rapt attention, and will long be remembered by all who had the privilege of hearing him. In his usual fluency, he elo- quently set forth the great need of Temperance organisations. He paid a high tribute to the Sons of Temp- erance, and the grand work they have achieved along temperance lines. He emphasized the necessity of be- ing temperate aiong 'all lines. In- teinperance is only one of the many evils that always beset life's Journey All must overcome it before attain- ing the blessings provided by God in Heaven. After eulogising late Premier -Peters for the part he had taken in enacting the Prohibition Law, and the earnest seal he had shown in enforcing same, he critiled the absurd idea of high licence, and in a forcible argument clearly showed that the licensed tavern was ,unlawful in the sight of God, and an allurin¢‘=- evil to the young in par- ticular: He than proceeded to show in`a`., convincing manner the many advantages of being a teetotlar mor- ally; physically and commercially exhortfng those who had taken the pledge of total abstinence, to .be true to their pledge, which meant their sacred honor.. After wishing "Try Again" every success in the future, as in the past he took his seat amid rounds of applause.-Com. :Take British Cough Cure when troubled with a nasty irritating cough. One of these projects has been talked of for years and calls for the construction of a tun- nel under Northumberland Straits, oonnecting Prince Edward Island with the New Brunswick shore at the nar- rowest part of~the. straits, where .thc island is only nine miles distant ‘from the mainland. This would .in- volve the estimated expenditure ' of $10,000,000. The other project which is the latest to be discussed, and which, on account of its apparent economy has met with considerable favor, provides for the construction ofi ics-breaking steamers of great power and the most. approved con- struction. The preeent ice-breakers in commission are unable to main- tain an uninterrupted service he- twsen the mainland and the island and often for weeks at s time navi- gationis wholly cut oil. The new plan calls for the abandonment of' the present winter route between Picton, N.B., and Georgetowu,ot the easterly end of Prince Edward Is- land, and substitutes therefore a new route between Tataimagouche, N.B., and Charlottetown. The objection to ,the Pictou~Georgetown route is that Plctou harbor is exposed to the prevailing easterly and northeasterly ,winter winds and becomes chocked with drift ice, which presents a bar- rier impossible of passage by any ‘steamer. no matter how great her power. Added to this is the fact that ,the great bulk of freight and the ma- jority of the passengers are destined ,for Charlottetown or points to the Iwestward oi this city, and in making flleorgetown the winter terminus of the line the merchants are obliged to pay increased freight charges on ‘account of the longer haul."
