Calif. Miss Garvey was runner-up to Marlene in last years British championship at Porthcawl. Wales, where she lost 7 and 6. This year it was much closer. The Irish champion squared the match at the lfith after Marlene bunkered her second shot. Mar- lene shot a 36 on the front nine to lead two up. She was outdriving her opponent and playing a better short game. Marlene went three up at the l2th. where Miss Garvey was bunkered. Marlene three-pulled the lam Nhere she drove into some trees. Miss Garvey squared the match at the 16th. where Marlene drove into the bunkers on her second shot. UNUSUAL RULING An unusual ruling was made at the 17th. Marlene was allowed to move her ball without penalty from a patch of ground behind the holQ. It was ruled that the de- pression had been caused by a roller. Marlene dropped on a clear spot and laid her chip dead for a half. The 18th was halved and Mar- lene clinched the match at the lDth where Miss Garvey was bunkered and Marlene shot a four. Miss Smith couldnit match Mar- lene's steadiness in the morning round. Three down at the turn, she won the 11th hole to keep with- in striking distance. But the dim- inutive Canadian closed her out with a four on.the 15th where Witty three-putted after reaching the green in two. In today's quarter-finals. I L Baseball and hockey player Billy Purcell has returned to his home in Charlottetown and will likely remain here until the fall. If he stays Purcell will be playing with 'one of the junior clubs in the City Baseball League. Bill has gained some experience in baseball circles having attended the Philadelphia Athletic training camp and having played with the Sudbury team in the Northern Ontario Nickel Belt League. 0 O 0 He states that Memorial Field ranks far ahead of any Class C or D baseball field he has seen in his travels. He claims that the lighting system here is ten times as good as that of home team he played with ill Kentucky. Bill was assigned to Hopkinsville class D Club in the Kitty League in Ken- tucky amg played 14 games with that club. However the weather was i.9o u'arm for him so he mov- ed back lo Ottawa and after work- ing out with the Ottawa Athletics joined he Sudbury Shamrocks, A mining strike in the Sudbury area -has caused a drastic drop in at- tendances at the games around Sudbury so that the League opera- tions were cancelled for a few days and there were cuts in both salary and personnel. 0 O 0 Purcell is still the property of the Phlladsrpllia Athletics and hopes to play in the A's system next season when the Athletics sponsor a team in Oshawa, On- tario. He was signed during train- ing camp this spring and when he left.the Kentucky club was told that he could not play professional baseball with any other club. The Athletics possibily have the small- est. farm system in baseball, spon- soring only five teams. 0 O 0 Last winter Bill played Junior Hockey with the liaatview Cana- dians. He had a good season and told us yesterday he was given an opportunity to sign a Boston con- tract. He has not signed any forms with Boston as yet but plans to get. some advice on this matter i from Bucko Trainor before making a move. I O O O . All in all it. was quite a year for :Purcell who left here last fall for fottawa. In addition to signing a professional baseball contract with .the Philadelphia Athletics and getting avchance to sign a pro hac- key contract with Boston Bruins he managed to complete his school course in Ottawa. Taken separate- ly each of these events is an outstanding thing in itself ,but lumped together in one year lthe,V form something very much iof the extraordinary. m..m...; Ellen Driscoll Wins N. S.
