SW RODD, THE DALY EXAMINER, CHARLOTTETOWN, OCTOBER 21 1839 The Boot Langunge, Some cities of which the Saunterer knows lay claim to premiership in cos- mopolitanism. But in proportion to population they do not compare with a vessel that steamed into Philadelphia ' the other day. included in the list are Turks, Arabs, Peruvians, Chileans, Chinamen and Filipinos. Naturally, with such a con- glomeration, any attempt at a lan- guage is useless—that is, a spoken lan- guage. An officer of the vessel, which is a tramp steamer, engaged in the sug- ar trade, by the way, told the Saun- terer about it. “We have only one language on board the boat in time of emergency,” he declared, “and that is what we term the boot language. It never fails. When a storm arises or anything else happens to cause speedy action on the part of the crew, the officers of the ship don’t try to talk. They make a few motiens with their hands, and if these don’t suffice, they employ the boot language. As you may readily guess, this is simply a series of kicks. One kick, well administered, beats a whole encyclopedia with men who don’t understand the language in which the encyclopedia is printed, and so we manage to get through. But I’ve often wondered what would happen to the ship if paralysis of the lower limbs should happen to set in among the officers.”—Philadelphia Inquirer. A Slight Misunderstanding. “Smithkins,” said the employer, “you may take a month off.” “Oh, sir,” replied the clerk as soon as he could command his voice, “it is so good of you to suggest it! I have felt the need of a rest for some time, but have hesitated to ask for it, know- ing how busy we are. But it will do me no end of good, and I thank you most heartily for your consideration.” “Smithkins,” said the employer, “are you crazy?” “Why, no, sir. Didn’t you say I might take a month off?” “Certainly that is what I said. This is the first of the month, while last month’s calendar remains over your desk. Take last month off and keep up to date. That’s what I meant.” Willing to Qualify. A few days ago a recruit was taken to be sworn in by the magistrate. Ev- erything was going on swimmingly till the magistrate asked the man the following question, “Have you -e2ver been in prison?” At this the man looked startled, but, quickly recovering himself, he blurted out, “No, sir, I have never been in jail, but I don’t mind doing a few days if you think it necessary.’’—London Tele- graph. An Uncomfortable Answer. In one of Sir George Colley’s letters he says: “Lord Lytton had a good story about poor Lord Leitrim, who, shortly before his murder, talking with a countryman about of landlord shooting, asked, ‘Why don’t the ‘Ah, thin, yer honner,’ said the man, ‘it’s just this— what’s everybody’s business no body's business!’ ” some cases rascals shoot me!’ is A neat little brush is attached to the tail of the glowworm, and it used to keep clean that part of the insect from which the light gleams so as to make it more distinctly visible. is lil Inek is, in nine cases out of ten. the result of saying pleasure first and duty second, instead of duty first and pleasure second.—T. Captain Rulon, of the Munyon Com- pany, Tells Some of His Varied Experience. ee The Elliott house has had as a guest durin8 the last week an ex-American military officer who has had an experince in the United States army such as any man might well be proud of, The gentleman is Captain Rulon, who has been here looking after the sale of Munyon remedies, he being the travelling representa- tive of the Munyon Company. No finer specimen of soldier could one wish or expect to see than this traveller. He is but middle aged, with an erect carriage, showing to ad- vantage the well-built form of more than six feet, Ife comes of an old French Huguenot family, his forefathers having gone to the Untted States to settle in 1682, Starting as a private in the 114th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, at the outbreak of the war between the North and South, he was three times premoted for gallantry on the field of battle during the war, holding in turn the offices of sergeant, Ist lieutenant, 2nd lieu- tenant, and captain. One of the most dearly- prized treasures which Captain Rulon has is the following letter, written on parchment, but now faded, which was given to him the day he mustered out of his regiment :— Philadelphia, June 25th, 1865, To whom it may concern : Capt. Harry E. Roulon, of Co.. B., 114th Regt. Pennsylvania Vols., is an officer known to me as one of worthand merit. He enlisted in my regiment as a private soldier, and was three times promoted for distinguished gal- lantry, viz. ; Fredericksburg, Chancellonsville, and Gettysburg, and always bore an irreproach- able reputation. I know no officer of my command whom I can recommend more high- ly or with greater pleasure than Captain Rulon. CHARLES H. T. COLLIS. Col. 114th Penna, Vols., Brevt-Maj.-Gen Vols. ' | ; _~_— Broke His Heart and His Purse. Mrs. White told the following story on her husband: Some years ago Fred Harvey gave Mr. White a pass, good at the Harvey eating houses along the Santa Fe, and Mr. and Mrs. White started on a trip to Colorado to take advantage of Mr. Harvey’s generosi- ty. At every eating station Mr. White ate enormously and then proudly pro- duced his froe ticket. He had had ita ‘ year and never before found opportu- The brave actions of the captain at Freder- ’ icksburg were fully repeated at Gettysburg, where, on the second day of the battle, he was wounded, and, with other Federals. cap- tured. He was but a lHeutenant then, but in order to forego the humiliation of surrender- ing his sword he threw it away, and broke his revolver, the only other arms he had, the remnants of which were handed over to a Confederate officer who had seen him, and who afterward proved to be Lieut. Col. Jas. Fairfax, of General Longstreet’s staff, who showed great kindness to Captain Rulon, when, by accident, he found the latter was a brother Mason. Following the capture, the captain was taken to Libby prison, and while in captivity he was, unaware to himself, promoted to captain, which news he learned months after, when he was released. Capt. Rulon’s many other war experiences are quite as Interesting as the one reiated, and he isa man with whom it is a decided pleas- ure to have a talk. As a raconteur he could scalcely be beaten, and when a Mail and Em- pire reporter ran across him on Saturday, it was with pleasure that the genial captain’s narratives were listened to. In peace he seems to have been quite as successful as in war, but success to a sociable, intelligent and warm-hearted man like Captain Rulon is only what is his due. Mrs. White, who was compelled to pay for her meals, ate very sparingly, and some of the other passengers remarked how much the husband ate and how daintily his wife nibbled. When they reached the last station where the free ticket was good, Mr. White ordered everything in sight and simply stuffed himself. Mrs. White re- mained in the car and nibbled a little lunch she had brought along. When Mr. White returned to the ear, his wife noticed that he looked mighty unhap- py considering that he bad previously been enormously enjoying the Fred Harvey free ticket. He continued looking unhappy, and his wife feared that possibly he had foundered him- self and pressed him for an explana- tion. “Well, Sallie,” he finaily said, “I might as well make a clean breast of it.
