Most gains of" pivotal issues were in a 1-point range. Turnover amounted to 1,990,000 shares compared with 2,210,000 Tuesday. ‘ , Coppers continued to fan under profit taking. Steels, motors, rub- bbers, chemicals, oils and rails also lost. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks declined 70 cents to $163 with industrials down $1.40, rails down 60 cents and utilities unchanged. Of the 15 most active stocks, seven fell and six rose with two unchanged. International Nickel lost 1/2 in a late flurry of trading in the Canadian section of the New York Exchange. Aluminium Ltd. and Canadian Pacific each lost 1/4. MONTREAL MONTREAL (CP) — Strength- ening at the close, prices moved from -mixed to irregularly higher Wednesday on the Montreal and Canadian stock exchanges. Indus- trial tiradling was moderate. Banks and constructz‘ion»s were the strong points. Stronger in the mixed‘ range were the steels and refining oils. Steel of Canada improved 3/4 to 53%. and Algo-ma gained 1/2 to 251/2 while Dominion Steel drop- ped % to 19g. Newsprints experienced losses of -the mixed variety. Bathunst droipiped 11/2 to 351/2 and Powell River" declined g to 29"/s while Howard Smith gained lg alt 29g.
