Light Losses On NewYork Stock Market BY FREDT-‘EICK GARDNER Associated Press Market Editor NEW YORK. Aug. 3 -—(A PJ-- The backwash of a London gold rush tossed up ripples of buying in the yellow metal shares in Wall Street today, making cross- currents in the stock market's slow down drift. The gold group rehearsed its familiar role in recent years of going counter to the main trend of stocks when capital in the world's money centres was moving underground to seek safety in the metal. Reports more than 314000.000 of gold had been bought in the open market in London, supple- menting a recent steady flow of capital in to gold, while the Brit- ish pound was skidding to a new low shifted attention in specu- lative cunps from the business recovery trend at home to events abroad. Final losses in most stocks were moderate. however, and trading became extremely quiet on the downside. The Associated Press composite of 60 stocks closed at 49. off .2 of a point. Transactions totalled 817.160 shares against 817.640 yesterday. Th Canadian department did little. Power Corporation ad- vanced 1 5-8 points to 16 1-8 with Dome and Lake Shore Mines, Mciatyre and Walkers showing mild improvement. Fractions low- er were International Nickel, Brazilian and Imperial Oil. Scattered gainers among in- dustrials included allied chemical. up 21-2 at 182, and American Smelting up 1 1-8 at 50 3-8. Down fractionally to 2 were U.» S. Steel, Bethlehem, Montgomery Ward, Anaconda Copper, Inter- national Nickel. Loew's, Western Union, Texas Corp., U. S. Rub- ber and Westinghouse Electric. Grain WINNIPEG, Aug. 3 —(CP)—- Winnipeg wheat futures advanced more than a cent today due to higher Liverpool prices and politi- cal tension in the far-east. Final values were 5-8-1 higher, October 76 3-8, November 76, December 75 1-8 and May 77 3-4 cents. The initial buying flurry, most- ly nervous covering, followed re- ports of warfare between Japan and Russia along the Siberian border. Later dealings came al- most to a standstill as Winnipeg brokers awaited the Canadian wheat board minimum wheat price announcement, expected tomorrow. The Canadian export sales o! 250,000 bushels, favorable inter- market spreading, and comparat- ively firm cash wheat prices off- set any bearish influence caused by beneficial rains in western Canada overnight. Coarse grains averaged fraction- ally higher near the close in sympathy with wheat. Trading was quiet. MONTREAL, Aug. 3 —(CP)— Wheat, northern, No. 1 .95 3-82 barley.
