Some Little Tricks to Amuse the Chil-
ren indoors _
Amongst all sorts of amusing ex-
periments whicn can be made with
tumblers, sticks, forks. and spoons,
perhaps one of the moat favorite ones
with child-ren is the penny and tumbler
trick.
lf you fill a tumbler with water»-
as full as it is possible without over-
flowing-and observe the line of the
water you will find that in the middle
of the tumbler the water is slightly
concave-that is, forms ii depressed
line just as li’ it had been scooped
out. This, which is caused by the
natural weight of the water, is how-
ever, not apparent to the usual uu-
initiated. and although the water
might. ou. the edge of the glass, be
almost on the point of overflowing,
any child can challenge a grown-up.

without spilling a single drop of water.
To perform this little trick the cop-
pers must be put exactly in the cen-
tre and dropped very gently, first in-
serting the edge in the water. Great
will be the surpriseicf all concerned
to see that, according to the size of
the glass, dye or six coppers can thus
be put in until the water in the centre
becomes level with the aides, when
of course, the water will dow over.
A most amusing experiment might
be triad with a lighted candle.
Take a tumbler half lull cf very cold.
water and, having lighted the candle,
hold it sideways over the tumbler. The
hot wax will pour in' drops into the
water, when the coldness of the latter
will congeal the melted wax imme-
diately it touches the surface of the
water, thus creating a rough~edged
little ball strangely l.ke the iiower
known as the "lily of the valley.” After
s. good many of these flowers are Dl'0~
duced in this way they are threaded
one at the time on a long thin piece
of wire, a small knot preventing the
Bower from slipping through.
The wires are then twisted lightly-
ovcr each other to form the spray
of lilies, wlich. when mixed with
strips of green paper cut and twisted
to imitate the long pointed leaves,
makes a most charming and interest

Something like a sensation was
caused in Berlin hy the publication hy
the German Crown Prince of ii hook
called " Germany in Arnis," ’l`lir.-
book, which is "most reverenily dedi-
cated to the German Emperor and
the Prussian King.” contains the inl-
lowiug motto: “The world does not
rest more safely on the shoilders of
Atlas than does Germany on her army
and navy."
The Imperial editor asserts that
Germany, more than any other land,
has to trust to its armaments, and
that as its geographical position is
unfavorable, and as all nations. do not
regard Germany with affection, the
country has the sacred duty imposed
on it always to maintain its army and
navy in a state of readiness. "Only
in this way, relying on our good sword,
can we maintain that place in the sun
which is ours, but which will not be
voluntarily conceded io us.”
The Crown Prince goes on to say
that diplomacy may delay the conflict
lor s. season, but those in responsible
positions must know that once a gigan-
tic conllagratlon is lighted it is not
so easy to extinguish.
Speaking of the delight oi' riding
to an attack, the Prliice says there
is one delight still greater-namely,
that of meeting the enemy at the end
of the gallop. and the dght for life
end death.
TANNING BY ELECTRICITY

Shorter Time
A new electric tanning process, inf
vented by the Swedish scientist, Dr.
A, Groth, and applied on a practical
scale in an English works, is attract-
'ing much attention, and one of the
prominent electrical firms is to take
it _up for commercial use. With this
method, the hides are put iii special
vats along with metal conductors, so
is to carry out an electrolytic action,
and this will tan the hides in much
less time than usual, for instance, six
weeks as compared to several months.
Leather of better quality is prodiic-_ed
ln this way, and the method gives a
perfect and solid tanning. Various
electrical devices in the shape of regu-
lators, also safety apparatus for over-
current. make the process almost an
iutomatlc one.
