We clip the following from the New York sorrespondent of the Detroit Free Press :— Fr, Huntington, the Episcopal clergyman ho presides over a mission church, that i salled the Church of the Holy Cross, on Avenue 4, in the vilest part of New York, has de- clared his intention to go s'umming with his poor démong the rich. Last Summer I spoke of the noble work done by this young man, whois no kid-gloved, dainty dilettante playing at raission work one day and gracing a dinner or reception the next, but who has gone down to live among the poor, making himself one of them, Iintend no aspersion on the social relaxations which the clergy whose lines are cast in pleasanter places permit themselves {no dining with their parishioners, or taking part in their social life they are only doing exactly what Fr. Huntington does, They try to get close to their flocks and to know them well; only as the circumstances and environ- ments vary so must the means vary. Called to work among the lowest and most vicious class in New York, perhaps, in order to gain influence with them Fr. Huntington found it necessary to live with these people. Assailed by all kinds of abuse and profanity and occasional missiles at first, this slender boyish faced son of the celebrated Dr. Huntington, of Grace Church, has become a tremendous cleansing »gent in this apparently irredeem. ab'e spot of filth and vice festering in the heart of the city, and though many of the results of his untiring labors and loving work are observable now, at the great day we shal) know even more of the wonders he has wrought among the sin-sick, reckless, wretched denizens of Avenue A. I do not think there is a clergyman of any denowina- tion in New York but what has a sincere admiration for Fr. Huntington and his work, whatever his views on the monastic life and the rites and ceremonies he adopts. “Fr, Huntington might wear a green silk gown if he fancied it,” said one warm admirer of his, a clergyman of a different denomina- tion. ‘lt would not affect my admiration of him. Such a lite would make me forgive and forget all the capes and cassocks in christen. dom.” Just what this apostle of the poor means by his promise to take the poor slumming among the rich we shall probably learn later. ‘There is something startling and titillating about the idea. p Rone knows how many parties have been made up to go “slumming” in the worst quarters of the city. The idea of a complimentary return visit from the cecupants of the tenement houses and Chinese districts is rather delicious. Imagine an Astor ball invaded by a band of those ragged starvelings with someone to point out to them the de pravity of decollete gowns and indulgence in champagne, Imagine a men’s dinner party at Delmonico’s, where some of our social knights have been oversindulging in wine, suddenly startled by a ‘slumming’ contingent from Avenne A, bent on seeing the vices of the rich at their worst, and accompanied by an ascetic young priest with pallid, gentle face John Knox at the court of Mary Stuart would be nothing to it for making the frivolous uncom- fortable. Well, we are not likely to hear of quite eo startling a thing, for Fr. Huntington is not a sensationalist, but we are interested to know just how he will go “slumming” among the rich with his poor. Supreme Court. THe court met Monday forenoon, ac- cording to adjournment. Jas. D. Taylor and ano. va. W. E. Daw- son and others—Action of damages for il- legal seizure of goods under bill of sale. Tried Hilary Term last when verdict was entered for plaintiffs for $245. Rules nisi were granted to both parties same term, That to the plaintiff called upon the de- fendant to show cause why the verdict should not be increased by certain sums therein mentioned ; and that to the de- fendant called upon the plaintiff to show cause why the verdict should not be enter- ed for the defendant or a new trial granted. These rules were duly argued last term, when the court took time, Yesterday the court delivered judgment o- dering that the verdict as entered for plaintiffs for $245 do stand ; and that both rules be discharged with costs. Davies & Haszard for plaintiffs ; Peters and Peters for defendants, Geo. Forbes vs. Fenton T. Newbery, an absent debtor, Mr. W. S. Stewart for plaintiff moved that the Bank of Nova Scotia be declared an agent or trustee of the defendant for the amount of plaintiff's claim, viz., $1900 ; or that the Bank be de- clared in contempt for disobeying the sum- mons to appear before the Court served upon the agent in Charlottetown. Court took time to consider. Court adjourned sine die. +e Woman Suffrage ‘and the Right of Suffrage. From Harpers Weekly. The argument that voting is a natural right, however, is a dangerous besis of the claim of suffrage, ause, if the community may restrict the right at all in the interest of the community, it may restrict the right to the degree which it thinks necessary to secure that interest. A law providing for equal suffrage will be passed whenever the present electorate is convinced that such « law is de- sirable for the common welfare. The common remark that women will vote whenever they prove that they wish to vote is foolish, be- cause that can never be done, They will vote whenever men think that the common interest will be promoted by their voting. It cannot be assumed that a majority of the lite Legis lature, however courteous to women, were of that opinion. '(St. John Sun.) The legislatures of the provinces of Can- ida have power to amend the constitution of the provinces. By virtue of that power, the legislature has made certain changes But the Legislative Council and the House of Assembly of this year cannot limit the power of the Legislature of next year oi the year after, to make further changes As the present Legislature of Prince Ed- ward Island has no power to repeal the British North America Act, the Legislature any time in the future may further amend the constitution in the way the Britisi:! North America Act provides. A major- ity vote will do it next year, or five years hence, as easily as it did this year. We doubt very much if the assent of Lieut Governor Carvell, followed by that of the Governor-General, would in the end pre- vent a majority of the Prince Edward Is- land House from abolishing property fran- chise. A measure passed by a majority vote in the Legislature repealing the act of this year, or sc much of it 1s was necessary, would probably receive assent in due course and the thing would be done. (Halifax Herald.) It appears that this preamble and the provision respecting a sudsequent repeal cf the act in whole or in part were added to the bill after it passed the assembly, as the only condition which the leg's.a'ive council would agree to their own «abolition. But if the bill had réceived the lieutenant- governor's ascent, it is extremely doubtful if it would have had the legal effect of re- stricting the power of a majority of any succeeding legislature to amend or repeal! its provisions. If so, it would be quite as competent for the partizan majority in one legislature to enact that its measures should be unalterable like those of the Medes and Persians. This attempt to bind a succeed- ing legislature was utterly ridiculous ; and if the lieutenant-governor had any doubt as to its effect, he acted wisely in reserving his assent. It is competent for the Imperial parlia- ment alone to impose such restrictions upon the legislative freedom of any provincial legislature ; and this is only one of many ridiculous acts which go to show that the grit governments of the provinces are all alike sorely afflicted with what is familiarly known as ‘*swelled head.” LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. Is This | True? Sir,—My attention was to day drawn to an item in @ recent issue of one of our dailies, stating that the Methodist Church had been given to the Salvation Army for next Sunday and Monday evenings. If the Trustees think the majority of the pew-holders (who sustain this handsome building) are in sympathy with this act they are very much mistaken. I for one (and I speak for many) do not wish to contribute the loan of my pew to such a pack of adventurers; and if the Church should be placed to such a disgrace, I hope the Trustees will have it well house- cleaned and fumigated afterwards. PEW-HOLDER. P. S.—Do you think I could get the Church for Uncle Tom’s Cabin ? Literary Notes.
