' CHAPMAN BROS N.S Amherst, , that the pdmps were started at three ‘ o’c'ock, \ false re port put in circulation this mors- but which fortunately has been controlled | without very serious consequences, occur- red at an early hour this morning. The engineer of the pumping station, looking out of his bedroom window at 4 a. m., discovered to his surprise that the pumpivg house was on fire. He burriediy dreseed, and while his daughter ran to St. to Charlottetowo, did what he could to stay the flames. Firemen from thecity arrived as quick- ly as possible with a hose ree!, but in the meantime the fire bad made euch pze gress that the roof had fallen in on the pumping machinery and little but the walls of the building was standing. Foriunately the boiler, being well pro- tected, was uninjured, and after the fire Mr, Dalzie!, Superintendent of Water and and Stewart's founderies were engaged to pat the pumps in order after the debris had been cleared away. There was fortunately a good supply of water in the reservoir. But in the gir- cumstances the supply had to be husband- ed and users inthe city were put on short allowance. Every effort is being made to have the pumps started with the least possible de- lay and the stoppage of the water supply may not be a matter ofmore thana few hours. The origin of the fire is not known. The boilers are carefully brick- ed off, and the only solution seems to be that it happened through spontaneeus combustion. The firemen deserve much preise for their willing efforts to subdue the fire which al will be glad to learn was not more serious in ite consequences. Since the above was written we ‘hear We have been requested to correct a ing, to the effect tbat the engineer at the Pumping Station rang up the Central in this city and failed to receive any re- eponse for an bour. The fact is, that when the fre was discovered the etation was in flames, aud the _ telephone there was destroyed. Mr. McDonald immediately sent his daughter to St. Dunstan’s College, where the alarm ware rung in to the telephone office by Rev. Dr. Monaghan, ard the signal answered by the night operator in less than three minutern, TO LET. Sr. Louis, Mo., May 15.—Tbe Presby- terian General Assembly will meet Thurs- day in the Washington and Compton Avenue Presbyterian Church, this city. Theinterest in the topics;on the programme and the scope and possible effects of over~ tures to be presented will make this one of the most important aseemblages held for the past two years. One of the im- portant matters to be brought up is the question as to whether the Westminster Confessicn of Faith shall be revised. The following are the eections in the Confession to which it is said exception is taken : 3 By the decree of God for the mani- festation of His glory, some men and an» gels are predestined unto everlasting life, and others fore-ordained to everlasting death. 4. These angels and men thus predes- tinated, and foresordained are particular- ly aud usehangestly designated, and their number is so certain and cdeffaite that it cannot either be increased or diminished. manent - —- © es 2 + To Hotel and Boarding House Keepers If all those who are desirous of accommo- dating f«ummer tourists aod others during the coming eeason will send their address to Tue Examiner office we wil) be appy to compile a list and forward to the different agencies which make a business of fur- nishivg such informaticn to the travelling public.
