Strawberry Boxes I y Committee On , Fisheries Meet‘ BOSTON. June l2—The Maritime Provinces were well represented at “he 14th Annual meeting oi the North American . Committee on Fishery Investigations here. Among hose who contributed valuable in- formation to the committee were 1r. A. G. Huntsman. director oi the 1t. Andrews Biological station. New Brunswick, secretary oi the com- nittec representing Canada; Dr. G. F‘. Sieggs. oi the University College, =t. John's. representing Newfound- Zanadian. Dr. Huntsman ‘lscussed the cod "agging done by the Canadian gov- rnmcnt. Hc stated that many oi ‘ic tagged Canadian cod remained ocalized" just as the cod do ofl’ the lnitcd States coast. Some oi’ tin Junndian cog tagged oil Cape Sable nigrntcd toward Halifax. while two ii them travelled all the way to thcde Island. vas discussed in some detail by Dr. Huntsman. The daniming oi Passa- noquoddy bay had been the subject if much controversy among the lo- _'nl interests with respect to its ei- '<~ct on the fisheries. It was brought izit by Dr. Huntsman that ii the bay .5 dnmmcd a considerable reduction ‘n the production oi food fish would "tsult. and a virtual elimination oi She local sardine industry and the ‘cilock fishery. On the other hand. ‘fir. Huntsman believed an increase ft the local mackerel and lobster fishery might result. A paper submitted by A. W. H. Nccdier. dealing with the haddock fishery in the waters oi‘ the Western Atlantic showed that the catch oi‘ this fish in American vessels ofl’ the ‘Jnltcd States coast has been on the increase since 1880. particularly since 1000, while that made oil‘ Can- udn in Canadian vessels has in- creased only slightly. The increase was said to be largely due to the use oi‘ otter trnwls. William C. Schroeder of the Un- ited States Bureau oi Fisheries, dis- eusecd the cod situation, pointing nit that each lnll n migration vii‘ rod took place from Nantucket Shoals to the waters oi Rhode Is- land, New York. New Jersey and Delaware. there to remain iintll the following spring, when they return to Nantucket Shoals. Many oi the iod in Eastern Maine waters remain ior months or even years in virt- ually the same locality. part oi them migrate to Nova Scotia while a iew stragglers may go southward. Only one marked fish irom Maine out of many thousands was caught as far south as south- ’ cm Massachusetts. Mr. Schroeder ls in charge of cod invcstiilations oi the bureau of fisheries and a ual- iy supervises the tagging oi t ous- ands oi’ these fish. His observations cause him to regard Massachusett. Bay as the dividing line for cod mi- grations, fish in that region moving north or south in about equal pro- portions. He has supervised the tagging of 37.000 cod, 10.000 had- dock and 4.500 pollock. About fivc percent oi the cod tagged have been reported recaptured by fishermen. All persons catching tagged fish are requested to forward the tags toge- ther with any available information regarding size. locality and date, to the Bureau of Fisheries. Washing- ton. D. C.. ii an American tag. or to Dr. A. G. Huntsman. St. Andrews. New Brunswick, it‘ a Canadian tag. Mr. Schroeder sees no danger of the serious decimation of cod, due to the iact that this fish is usually found on ocean bottoms oi such rug- ged charactcr that they may be caught only by hand lines. The great increase in the con- sumption oi haddock. which may be taken in nets. has caused some per- sons to look with mild alann on the supply of this fish ior the future. The annual world catch oi cod aggregates one billion pounds. oi which only twelve percent is taken by United States vesels, lle New- roundland takes the largest catch oi this fish. ...__..--¢0—>—-—- MALPEQUE Mrs. James W.
