A Voter's View. Sin,—We are advised by the Patriot to vote against the present candidate, Mr. A. A. MeLean, and thereby show our disapproval of the present Government, As farmers. it becomes our duty to look into the matter for ourselves, instead of tak- ing the opinions of the Patriot or anyone else, and make ourselves thoroughly acquainted with the situation, so that we can use our own judgment, In order to decide intelligently, we must take tre Public Accounts and see what our financial position is asa Province, and also whether our revenue is, and has been, proper- ly expended, and also compare the manage- ment of the present Government with that of their predecessors, (for by that means only can we judge of their conduct), and farther see if their pronounced policy of economy has been carried out. I tind that the revenue received during the two full years the Davies-Stewart Govern- ment was in power, was $66,° 52.54 per annum more than the average under the present Gov- ernment. This excess of revenue was made up by the amount received from the Assessment and old Land Tax, which was collected in 1877, and the collections trom the Land Office. The other items of revenue were much the same as under the present Government. This excess of revenue thus came directly from the pockers of she people. This amount haa been left wilh the people by the preseat Government. The question naturally arises: did the late Government expend that much more money in the country for the benefit of the people than the present Government’ I find on examining the public accounts that such is not the case. On the contrary, the expendi- tures of public money throughout the country for thet which directly benefits the people and the country has been fully as large under the present management as the late Government. This is fact, notwithstanding the total amount of expenditure by the present Government has been, yearly, more than $60,000 less than by the Davies-Stewart Government. Where, then, has this large saving been made? This is the important question for us lo consider, and 1 have taken considerable pains to get at the bottom of it ; and, among other things, I find the following sums saved yearly under the present management : — Cost of Legislation about (yearly). ...$ 5,000 Cost of Administration of Justice.... 10,000 Cost of Printing and Stationery..... 5,000 Executive Council Meeting.......... 1,500 Management of Stock Farm......... 1,500 Salaries of Land Office. ............. 2,000 Salaries to four heads of departments 2,500 Amalgamation of Prince of Wales College and Normal School..... 2,500 3 30,000 While the balance of the amount is saved in the salaries and expenditure of the several departments and other items of useless ex- penditure which has been cut off, making in all over $60,000 yearly saved to the country which had to be contributed by us farmers. These matters are of great importance to us as electors, and should be duly considered by each one for himself. We are the taxpayers. There are other matters of importance, also, which should be thought of, such as the rela tion between our present Local Government and the Dominion Government. How do we stand in regard to capital from which we draw our yearly subsidy ? 1 find that our capital is larger by over half a million than when the present Government came _ into power in 1879. This speaks well for them. Also our claims on -the Dominion Govern- ment. Is our Local Government looking after them? I think any unprejudiced mind must give them credit for doing their duty in this respect. I have not space, Mr. Editor, in the present letter to go into the matter more fully, but by your leave will write you again. However, with the above facts before us, any man who approves of good and efficient management in public affairs, should by all means support the present Local Government.
