This is a splendid beginning for the rural schools. and it is hoped that every school in the province will contribute towards the work of the Red Cross Society. IMPORTANT. RIFLE TROPHY.--In the window of Rltchie’s bookstore, Queen's Square, there is in view a beautiful silver trophy which is to be presented to Mr. G. Russell Beer. It was subscrib- ed for by a few members ot’ the Civi- lian Rifle Club and some other of his friends who desire to express tangi- bly their appreciation of Mr. Beer's wonderful peri'orinaiiccs of making the perfect score of 105 points at 200, 500 und 600 yards in July last. The trophy is in thc torin ol a Grecian vase, standing over a foot high and mounted on an ebony pedestal, and it bears the following inscription: "Civilian Rifle Club, Charlottetown. P. E. I. Presented to G. It. Beer for making the possible score of 105 points out of 21 shots at 200, 500, 600 yards, July, 1914.” FROM BOSTON.-Mr. Chester Acorn, of the Maritime Fox Exchange und Investment Company, has return- cd to Cliarlottetowii from Boston, Mass., where lie lind been on it short visit. The cost of living in Boston, says Mr. Acorn, has advanced at least 50 per cent., sugar being 9 cents per pound, flour $8 per barrel and meat from 40 to 50 cents per pound. The ofllces wlilcli handle securities have closed down, and factories, owing to the dlfliculty they experience in pro- curing material, have been obliged to discontinue operations. Although the newspapers are insisting upon the ad- vantages which will ficcrue to the United States as a result of the war, the American industries do not_appear to be very active, and hardship, de- clares Mr. Acorn is evident. The out- look in Boston for the coming winter. he tliliiks, is decidedly gloomy and he is glad to be back again to the coni- parative coriifort of Charlottetown life. NEWPORT.--Harvesting has al- ready begun in ,this very busy center. The grain crop is exceptionally good. The peo- ple here are beconilug more jubillsnt as the Newport steam ferry is nearing completion. It is hoped their joy will reach its climax this coming autumn. Another of the many conveniences and advantages that Newport possesses is a telephone sys- tem that our respected pastor Rev. G. J. G. McDonald was instrumental in having established, which will make vocal communication possible with all the surrounding towns and cities. So Newport has every chance and will undoubtedly become a city of com- mercial importance. Miss K. Steele, who has been visiting her parents here is soon to return to Boston whore she has `an excellent position. The woods were never in better condition ln this district. Mr. R. A. Campbell our roadmaster, deserves praise. The district school is very satisfactory this year under the judicious manage- mont of Mr. Farrell, who enjoys a teacher and student. Mr. Philip Sloane is building a new dwelling house. ::You will enioy your outing more ii you take s Thermos Bottle with you-You can keep liquids bot or cold for twenty-tour hours. The eexton rushed for material to smother the flame, but before same could he got the oil fell in a burning mass to the floor. In a moment the wains- coating, rallinx. curtain, etc., became Involved. With the help of the church people. who rushed to the _scene and used various devices such as sand, old brooms and plenty of noise, the venerable building has yet a. fair ‘chance of reaching the cen- tury mark, as it was built ninety years`ago, but one minute more and that chance would have been lost. Considerable damage was done but the trustees are pleased that Hynd- man & Co., of Charlotetown, lost no time in putting things all right. T0 ENCOURAGE SHOOTING. -- There is on exhibition in one of the show windows of Mr. G. E. Ritclile's bookstore, Sunnyside. ii small silver cup that has a considerable amount of interest and importance attached to it. A liaiidsonie little trophy it is in itself a desirable thing to gain. but even a greater feature in its desirabil- ity is the fact that it stands as ti prize for the encouragement of rifle shooting. The cup has been provided by that entliusiastic rifle shot, Mr. W. S. Lousoii. Captain ot' the Civilian Rifle Club, and is intended for conipe- tition among citl'/.cus who have never won a prize in rifle shooting. The purpose oi the trophy is 'even greater than that: it is intended as an in- ducement to civilians to go in for rillc shooting, the importance of which has become intensified in these times. The cup will be competed for on Sat- urday, Sept. 19th., at Kensington range, and the conditions will be seven shots at 200 yards. If citizens have taken this urgent matter to heart, the __ necessity of every man having ii. working acquniiitaiicc with a. rifle, there should he an enthusias- tic response to Mr. Lousoii's praise- worthy effort. ::Yon can make no question about the purity of llarmony Soups, for they are as truiispnreiit as wiiidow glass, 'und are made from thc purest of vege- table oils and the finest glyceriue.
