RAMSEY The great phrase ‘‘in the im- ege of God” has been given almost as many interpretations as there are .branches of the C “istian Church. Therefore, let us begin today’s lesson with a brief discussion of this most {m- portant subjects The, ‘image of God" in which man was. created cannot be an exact physical image, else we would all look alike and there could be no accounting for the multiplicity of physical differ- ences among men. Rather, we believe, the “image of God” in |), which man was created is a re thing, meaning that sses certain divine terms with his Creator and be- tween thern is a relationship which other creatures do not and-cannot possess. Animals’ lives: are arranged for them bythe Creator; they are driven by instinct to do cer- tain things in a certain way. | Man, on the other hand, has been endowed with something | which puts him on terms of. un- | derstanding with the Creator, enabling him to look up to Him in adoration and without: fear. Man has a true knowledge, righteousness and holiness not possessed by other creatures. He has intellectual. power and acapacity to think God's thoughts after Him: He has a moral nature and a free will. He can know the. difference be- tween good and evil and can either obey or disobey God in sey choice between the two. is, then, is the person of man cael “inthe image of God." Next to God Himself .man is wellbeing greater than. that of » mals.—Matthew 12:1-14. — MEMORY VERSE; “So God crected man in his own image, in the image of God created he 2 Matthew 12, the satisfaction man’s hunger and the healing of |man’s illnesses are far more im- portant than the observance of rituals and the recovery of a sheep. From. our Lord's discussion of the dignity and worth of man in God’s sight with the legalistic | Pharisees, let us turn to the | second passage from Matthew assigned to our lesson. Here we find Jesus answering the ques tion ‘of His own disciples as to who is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. In His reply we see the great tenderness and great thunder of Jesus, Of all. mankind, none {s more precious in the sight of the Father and the Son than the ‘‘lit- tle ones’’— the children. It is a store- house of spiritual values, Without a strong Church, neither: democracy nor civilization can survive. There are four sound reasons why every person should attend services regu- larly and support the Church, They are: (1) For his own sake. (2) For his children’s sake, (3) For the sake of his‘ community and nation. (4) For the sake of the Church itself, which needs his moral and material support. Plan to go to church regu- larly and read your Bible aN A. It has been said that a man is tallest'when he is on’ his knees. The familiar pic- ture of George Washington kneeling in prayer at Valley Forge reminds us that the “Fe of our Country” was a man who walked close to God and who taught his nitiol to pray. fashington recognized that human frailty is not a sign of weakness — that it is the first step toward finding the needed strength. To call upon God for the re- scurces we lack is to, supply our deepest want. The example of our first President stil! points men to God. Just as George Wash- ./ ington found God’s strength available, so do men in our time when they call upon Him in faith.
