In. my approval ofthe measures. It soon afterwards, however, became evident to me that the attempt to recover these lands from the Government was altogether absurd; so that]. ceased to feel any interest iii the matter, and never took any further notice of their proceedings. “By what species of ingenuity the object of recovering lands said to belong to the Baronets of Nova Scotia has been made to slide into the present seh’eme, I out atn total loss to understand. I was applied to, to become a Vice-President; but to this application 1 never replied, nor have 1 in any way sanctioned the chameleon-like appearance which has been adopted. “1 might not have considered it necessary to have obiect- ed to my name being mixed up with this British American Association, had its objects been clear and intelligible, and likely to have been ofaity advantage to the public; but since all its proceedings seem to be so dark and mysterious, and of very questionable advantages to those for whom they are said to be devised, 1 think it due to ntysclf to send your Lord. ship this explanation of my connection with the British American Association. “I have the honor to be, my Lord, your Lordship'c most obedient hu ;.ble servant, ’ “Erasmus.” Erler 1%}: Letter from his Grace the Duke of flrgyll to Mr. eltleship, dated Inverary, 4th .N'ovember. ' “l was induced, by the eloquent representations of Dr. Rolph, to take an interest in the Society, because 1 really be"- lieved that such a Society, if properly conducted, would af- ford greater fitcilities for enabling it large mass ofalniost deu- titute inhabitants upon my estates of Tirie and Mull to emi- grate to Canada upon safe and certain grounds; and with the guarantee ofa respectable company, that they would, im‘- mediater upon arrival in America, he placed upon lands where, if'tbey were disposed to be industrious, they might speedily realize a comfortable independence"; and I deter- mined that none of'the people upon my estates should emi- grate at all, it they would, take my advice, titttil a sure and ‘ certain situation should be secured for every individual pro- posing to remove. “ By means ofthe Company, I hoped more readily to ob- tain this desirable end; but hitherto I have been disappoint- ed ; and l feel that it is a ridiculous situation to ltold the pro. sidency ofa company professing to provide lands for desti- tute persons to emigrate to, but who have never yet exhibi- ted their title-deeds to any lands, or proved their possession of capital stock to my satisfitction ; neither have they, since I presided at a meeting iii June last, reported to me, their President, any details of their proceedings or future plans. Now, it does not suit my ideas of propriety to hold the office of President of a Society of whose proceedings 1 am not regularly informed, and over which I have, in fact, no controtil whatever; and therefore. without presuming to doubt the good faith and good inten- tions of those who assume the management of tho sooiety, I beg leave to withdraw my name from the situation of Pre- sident, and to take my son’s name also out ofthe‘list of Vice- Presidents.” ~ , (From the Globe of Nov. 16.) The British Jlmerican Emigration Society figures again in the papers of this morning, in two very different characters. In the first page of the Times the company is represented as being about to apply to Parliament for leave to bring in I. bill, while its refusal to settle one forms the subject of'an ac- tion reported in another column. Whether the notice of an intended application to Parlia- ment will he followed tip, remains to be seen; but it is'cer— tain that in Inany intanceI—tliough we do not say it is the casein this—a little cash is expended in such advertisement! as that which the American Emigration Association has put forth, merely to give the appearance of bonafidc solidity to what is nothing more than a bubble company. I We presume that il‘tbe managers of the 'Societyjn quel- Ition have really the intention of going to the legislature for an act ofincorporution, they are prepared to show that they are entitled to it; and if they succeed in doing this, we must allow that they have been very unfortunate in the treatment they have experienced from the public and the press, to say nothing of the slur that has been cast on them by one noble- man who refused to become a Patron, and another who con,- sented to be announced as President. Perhaps, before the time arrives for proceedings in Parliament, the managers of the Association will have made up their minds as to wltattheit objects really are, for at present they are involvod in conaL. derable mystery. The restoration of certain lands to the or. der of Scotch Baronets, and the sending out of'mecbanics to Prince Edward Island, at seasons when safe arrival there is almost impossible, appear to be the two grand leading ideal that have been as yet attempted to be carried out by tho British American Emigration and Colonization company. If the Association should turn out to be, after all, It very reputable concern, it is to be regretted that appearances sltould have been so very much the other way; and It is rather an awkward conlretemps that the Company’s notice ofan intended application to parliament, and the report of an undefended action for the paltry sum of £13 16s. 7d,, should be recorded in the same newspaper.
