OTTAWA, Dec. 16-"Any attempt to make political capital out of this question of the high cost of living would be false to the facts. I donlt thiink free food would be a very per- ceptible factor in reducing the cost of living." E. C. Drury, ermaster ofthe Dominion Grange, threw cold water thus upon the platform of the Laurier party, in the course of a long hear- ing of representatives of the Grain Growers and Dominion Grange this afternoon. The deputation asked for the removal of duty on wheat and lour and agricultural implements and an increase of the British prefer- ence to fifty per cent with free _trade within the Empire in five years. They also asked for a federal law for char- tering Farmers’ Co-Operative Assoc- lations. The delegation was made up of leaders in the big delegation of far- mers which waitcd on the Laurier Government in 1910 and asked for free food, a request which Mr. Laurier then refused. OTTAWA, Dec. 16-Opposing any interference with the tariff and ex- pressing views quite opposite to those of thc Grain Growers' delegation, Ontario fruit men interviewed the Government this afternoon. In the nurse of their interview it was ointed out that the grain growers did not represent the farmers as the farmers were opposed to reciprocity and if there was any need to oppose reciprocity in 1.911 there was infin- itely greater need now. Erland Lee, President of the On- tario Grain Growers, declared that Ontario farmers wanted to preserve their markets by protection and that the policy of Laurier did not repre- sent what they helieved would fit the case. . I ociuci Jchueon. Forest. Ontario. spd one of the largest fruit growers in Canada, said if the American tariff on fruit was reduced it would lead to the dumping into Canada of immense quantities of American fruit to tho detriment of the Canadian industry. The Prime Minister in reply said the subjects would receive careful atten- tion at the hands of the Government.
